Things I should see within 200 miles of Ebbets Pass next month...

Restaurants, sandwich shops, sights?

Have a great map detailing all the roads in the area but specific routes appreciated also.

Will be staying in a cabin in Dorrington for three nights with a riding buddy.

Definitely bringing the perforated armored leather jacket and evaporative vest.

Tons of great riding up there. Last time I was up that way, I split off a bit and ate at the Hope Valley Cafe instead of stopping in Markleeville. Really cool little joint - nice folks and tasty chow.

Dorrington is actually up Ebbets Pass a few miles so obviously I'll be riding the whole thing several times going to and fro other areas and will be able see if it is, indeed, only for the very highest caliber of rider.

I've been in the Lassen Area and other parts of NorCal on cabin tours and as of right now I'd have to say Mendocino County stands out for riding nirvana though, obviously, the immediate Bay Area has some outstanding riding areas as well.

Mendo is gorgeous, the roads are generally in fine repair and lots of medium open flowing twisties with good sight lines, the bonus being pretty empty on weekdays with apparently minimal enforcement.

Only negative is what the Bay Area has in spades; great little places to stop and eat fantastic grub.

What bike are you taking? Looking for just good paved twisties or goaty/mild dirt?

Re food: Grounds in Murphys for breakfast, Firehouse for lunch/dinner...mex/bbq/pizzas, Murphys hotel for awesome cowboy bar and great steaks.

In Arnold: Arnold Chinese, Giant Burger, Sarafina's Italian; bigtrees market has a deli and butcher counter w good cuts of meat for the bbq on the deck.

Things to see/do:
Boardscrossing/ sourgrass - n fork of Stanislaus river - in Dorrington, great access to the river, trails along the river, good trout fishing!
Lake Alpine - top of hwy 4, right where ebbetts pass proper begins. Beautiful alpine lake, with hiking, non-motorized boating etc. Wonderful at dusk with the fading light reflecting across the lake, lodge there with good food, reservations recommended.

Should also consider riding little tail of the Dragon? on 49 SE of Angels Camp...can do a loop ebbetts-Sonora passes and ithink Dragon will be on the return leg or not too far off it.

June Lake is really cool. I camped there with some buddies a few weeks ago. It's just south east of Lee Vining off 395.

Take a ride up Bucks Lake Road and also hit the Oroville/Quincy Hwy, return via 49. Great coffee in 'downtown' Quincy.

Ate at this place Saturday, though it was just a breakfast burrito because BBQ was not being served at 10am Got the feeling from the decor and notes/license plates/etc from foreign countries that it was a bit of a spot. Looked up the reviews and now I wanna go back for BBQ.

It might be a bit of a stretch, but head out of Yosemite down to Italian Bar Road / Road 225 down to Redinger Lake and back up the other side - lots of dusty pavement and dirt switchbacks over there. Totally doable on a streetbike and lots of fun - although it got a little Deliverance-y last time I was through there. If by chance you're taking your DRZ, I bet you'd have a blast.

Did anyone say it was "only for the highest caliber of rider"?

It's a public road...most anyone can manage it.

A few can't, The guy that borrowed Flying Hun's 650 Kawasaki, and crashed it up there, left a skid mark that said he couldn't handle it.

In Bear Valley I past a guy in a group of four others, on ratty Harleys, and then on the return, they are stopped in the steep switchbacks and the one, on the rattiest bike, looked like he might be in tears, facing the (for him) the impossible.

Gobs, maybe low jillions ride it OK...some are slower than others..That's all.

You should participate in a SEER course. They teach Marines on the eastern side of Ebbets. Not sure how you would get into a course. You may have to enlist.

Who is the "you" your talking to? What Does SEER stand for? (real words so difficult?) And why would the Marines use East side of Ebbetts when they have a training base on East side of Sonora pass?

I've visited this place as a day ride destination from the Bay area: Lunch at Walker BBQ! It's a long day, but Sierra passes both ways and a great lunch.
