Maximum speed if bike is on hitch-carrier?
Hi all,
I'm looking to purchase my first west-coast dirt bike this weekend up near Sacramento. Thus, I'll have to drive to Sacramento and back. I'm planning on transporting it using a hitch-mounted carrier, and was wondering if the 55 mph max speed limit applies to me when I'm towing with a hitch mounted carrier, even though I don't have a third axle touching the ground (although I'm afraid they'll try to classify it as "vehicle towing other vehicle"). Just trying to avoid any potential tickets from the good 'ol CHP Thanks! |

Nope. 55 is for vehicles towing trailers. A hitch carrier is the same as having it in the back of a truck. Just make sure the hitch carrier is a decent one.

Great! I have a Mototote MTX m3 coming via FedEx on Friday!
Back when I was on the east coast I had a buddy with a MTX Sport (for his FZ-07) and fell in love with it. Supposedly the m3 is supposed to be better for dirt bikes (and it's a tiny bit cheaper). Any requirement on having my plate visible? The bike will definitely block it |

I think the main thing they look at is that the rear tail lights are visible.

Technically, your plate is required to be visible. As long as the bike is on there and you don't leave the hitch on to intentionally obstruct the plate, I doubt you'd be bothered.

I'm pretty sure you can go as fast as you can within the speedlimit with a hitchcarrier.
