Construction on 36 - BARF

Per Caltrans, it seems that 36 is closed on weekdays (except for a few hours a day) for construction for a few miles just west of the Trinity/Humboldt county line. Which means it’s open on weekends, but with - I assume - a stretch of gravel.

Has anyone ridden 36 lately, and if so, how’s the construction area? I have a new Wee that isn’t really set up for off-pavement use (no skid plate or crash bars). Are we talking 4-inch-deep gravel here, or fairly smooth stuff?

I went through there a few weeks ago on my FJR. I think the gravel section was only at most 20 yards. No biggie. You can hardly tell it was gravel. It's been that way for a couple of years now.

But it sounds like the scope is much less than they’re saying.

we rode through there on 6/22. There wasn't any gravel sections there anymore. Road crews were working on storm drains near red bluff, first time I ever had to follow a pilot car on that road

Don't do it. It's a road that demands your undivided attention. It is too far for a day ride. Have you charted out the miles. That's a really big day.

No gravel last weekend. Open all weekend. There is 1 light that takes a few minutes between cycles, but that's it.

It's a terrible road though. No fun, too much traffic and cops everywhere. You won't like it at all.

we spent the night in Fortuna and ride back the next day. That was almost 750 miles with the route we took. I don't recommend doing all that in one day unless you're fucking superman

I’ve done it in a day before ... the hard way (coming back on 1 the whole way). This time I’ll probably just take 1 to 128 to 101 instead. That previous ride was 10 years ago. :old

I’d rather spend the night in Fortuna, but IDK about motels now, COVID-wise. Is the brewery selling beer to go?

Hotels are open. I don't know about the brewery. Call either the brewery or the hotel across the street.

The Super 8 is apparently open; I’m just not sure about safety. My husband and I are both in high-risk groups and have been very careful to avoid exposure.

I’m sure 36 will still be there in 2021 (and 2022, and 2023)...

I rode over 36 in August on a Saturday. Got stuck in construction just outside Red Bluff for 8 or 10 minutes. (EDIT, maybe a mile of gravel)
