Uber Strike - Tolerable Traffic

I understand that Uber drivers are on strike today, protesting ever decreasing wages and 'job' security.
Am I imagining it, or is traffic in and around downtown SF flowing smoothly with a minimum of aggravation, honking, and near misses?

It'd be pretty funny if they just shot themselves in the foot with this strike.

Meh, it is lighter today, but I feel like the, "Day Without A Mexican," was better.

The only Sick Out people in San Francisco care about is if BART takes the day off, and last time they did that, the backlash nearly destroyed their Union.

Yeah, they better be careful or a bunch of unregulated inexperienced scab drivers are going to walk in off the street and undercut their Monopoly.

Very interesting, huh...? in other news, decreasing the number of (*)cars which make the traffic worse, improved traffic!

My commute to San Rafael this morning was still as shitty as any other day.

Uber exists only for cities like San Francisco, so there were no additional/less cars on your route!!!!

I expect 37 would be unimpacted, but 101 was certainly easier today.

I think a lot of people commute into the city to work for Uber/Lyft.

Uber algorithms will automatically cull any Uber drivers participating in the strike.

Yes, but not that much from Napa/Vallejo probably.

True, at 5am from Merced and Vallejo. Thanks, enterprise, for filling the place with more cars!

Maybe not Napa..Sonoma... and Marin..

Probably Santa Rosa! Which would explain the 101.

I notice that most Uber drivers are Lyft drivers, so do they just switch to Lyft that day? There have been articles discussing nasty anti-competition taticts between Uber and Lyft, could this be on of those tactics.

Probably true, but if they are Uber/Lyft drivers, wouldn't they naturally try to pick up people needing rides and carpool into the city - overall helping traffic?

Back when Future Shock first came out, it described the speeding up on trends, tech, etc.

I bring it up because companies are going from Solution to Public Enemies so fast anymore. FB is still really popular but its pretty much besmirched in so many ways. Amazon, Google, they all held such promise but seem to be tanking below the traditional hated corps.

Uber seemed like such a solution to taxi license hegemony. But it's gone from being the next great idea, to the source of many of our woes. I was always skeptical in the sense that at a basic human level, the idea that my job ain't good enough, so I need a "side hustle" as they put it in their commericals. I hear it referred to as the "gig economy." But I have always called it, and AirBnB as the "Desperation Economy" where you do shit you normally would never want. Sure, i want strangers to puke in my car and shit in my toilet. No prob! I mean, the parallel explanation, I suppose, is that people live beyond their means with ready credit and too many purchases. Then they are forced to do things to make up for their errors.

First it was the fact that these car services park in unwanted places because ultimately, they do HAVE to stop somewhere, despite this model of constant motion. Then, the evidence has been mounting that traffic issues in our big cities may be parallel to increases in the car services. Then we heard about exploiting the workers and this strike. When I hear that people actually commute using Uber, I keep trying to figure out how this can pencil out. OR, how long will it make any sense before change renders that model incorrectly. I feel the same way about Amazon Prime too. It seems really weird for my sis to order groceries on Prime in her rural locale for the Prime delivery option. doesn't make sense.

The scooter thing too. I don't know that people hate the companies, exactly, but it cracks me up that so many end up in Lake Merritt. That is some downright hostility right thar. At first, it was this ultimate urban independance. Thankfully, Segways seemed to kind of disappear around here, anyway. Sorry if you had stock in it.

Such promise! Such creativity! Wiped away very fast.

That Uber/Gig drivers would work in an industry that bypassed/flouted established rules and regulations that allowed licensed taxi drivers to earn a fair living wage.

And now those same Uber/Gig drivers are complaining that wages suck.

Irony or tragedy?
