Migrating a Domain Name to a new host

I will begin with:
I don't know what or how any of this web host domain name stuff works. I have a VERY out dated website, the Domain name is registered and that lease/host/ ??? is about to expire. Before I renew with the current host I want to move it all over to Google, get an email addy that isn't and modernize the site.

Anyone able to walk a complete moron through this process or better yet help in person for $$$??

I have 40 more days before I have to hand over my credit crad to current host.
