I need shortcuts for three non-english vowels on my Surface--help?

Title says it all. I've been taking Danish classes for a bit now and need to type out my homework. I'm missing three vowels. I have the Danish keyboard loaded, but it's a pain in the ass since the layout is a bit different. I just want some quick key commands for my Surface. Anybody know how to do this? I've looked up several websites for this, and oddly, my first attempt at doing what they say seems to work, but then it never does again--somehow Word or my Surface thinks it's wrong and corrects the "error" from there on out.

I need these (both capital and lowercase), so six new letters. Ideally the commands between capital and lowercase of the same vowel won't be too different.

As a half-Dane on my father's side, I'm both honored & curious as to why, but regardless.

I can't help with your issue, tho.

EDIT: Could you use ASCII to insert what's needed? ALT-134, etc?

Can't confirm a Surface will do this but,

On my laptop (in tablet mode) or actual tablet, when a letter key is held on screen, a menu of alternatives are revealed. All those you listed are contained on the menu for the 'a' key. See-

Alt key codes are faster than the above.

Thanks for the tips! I don’t have access to my computer right now but will try later. Will have questions…

You can always use the windows character map. Open the start menu and type charmap in the search box. You can copy/paste from there and it'll also give you the alt-codes.

Found this: Keyboard shortcuts for international characters at Microsoft support. Includes:

, : CTRL+SHIFT+@, a or A

, : CTRL+SHIFT+&, a or A

, : CTRL+/, o or O

They work as advertised in Word for Windows on a desktop.

Thanks, Dan. I had one of those work for me on my tablet. Then it wouldn’t do it again. It’s a mystery why.

I tested that--multiple use in the same document--and didn't see what you saw.

Is it like autocorrect of a spelling error? Or does the intended character simply not appear?

EDIT: Try this test: In a document where characters fail in the way you describe, try instead to paste them in after copying from your OP in this thread. If Word is reacting as if to a spelling error, the same effect should occur.

Also, are you using a Danish dictionary (File/Options/Proofing/Custom Dictionaries)? That might be helpful.

I will try that.

I do have a Danish dictionary set up (it automatically defaults to that when I change keyboards, but it goes back to English when I use the English keyboard. It's the same on my phone.) I'll play with that setting also though and just see what I can get it to do.

I plan on living there part-time in the next several years. I went to school there for a short time in college and enjoyed the place.

I think the ASCII codes are what we're talking about below, but perhaps not. I don't know much about computer code (less than Danish even--as if that's possible).

Also, you can try your own sigil, like AO, or whatever, and then do a global replace with the cut and pasted character. That was you can at least keep typing, and then clean it up later.

Macs do this apparently. Sadly, PCs do not. Or at least I haven't figured out how to do it.

Are you using the Danish keyboard when the error occurs? Those character codes may work only on the English keyboard.
