Mac Mini 2020 M1

Anybody bought one? I'm thinking on buying a 512/16 M1. I'd use my current Mac Mini as an external HD.

I don’t have one yet and I’m seriously considering getting one at work.

Head-to-Head the other person in my company can render a 1080p60 1hr project on 422ProRes about 20 percent faster than I can on the previous Intel I7 Mac Mini with 16gb ram.

Forgot to add. The other thing I notice is his ability to continue multitasking whilst my machine will bog down slightly.

I'm running a 2.3 Ghz quad core Intel I7 with 16 Mb ram and while it's faster than anything else I have had, it still is downright pokey rendering graphics derived from a semi large database. I guess I'm being picky, the previous macs needed 10-20 seconds, this one needs 3-5 seconds. I just want it all right now.

The specs and reviews are pretty spectacular for the price. Sadly the whole damn thing is soldered together and no way to upgrade memory or change HD.

Yup, that upsets me about Apple; soldered components and dongles.

My previous Macbook allowed me to run live event content via native HDMI into a Blackmagic switcher. Now I've gotta go through a dongle. I just don't get that sense of a clean workspace and solid connection.

My desk looks like a convention of hapless cords. Every year I dive in and throw out three or four than no longer do anything. I've been running Macs from the same desk for thirty plus years and have cords going back to SCSI, finally threw out the Zip drives, floppies, and that $600 10 MB hard drive from 1988.

I have one. I really only record music on it. Rarely even use it for browsing but it's been a really great machine. The new Mac os is kinda bloated and more "iphone-ish" with every update, but it's handled everything I've thrown at it so far

I have one and use it for work - mostly iPhone development. Its faster and way more memory efficient than my 2017 i7-7920HQ MBP. My compile times are >50% faster, probably due to double the processor cores and improved software efficiency. Both machines have 16GB. My work would occasionally slow the MBP to a crawl by using all the memory and was worried about not being able to upgrade to 32GB with the new Mini. But it really hasn't been an issue. I suspect the new processor architecture is much better at managing the memory. The Mini is the fastest machine I've ever used for work. Its amazing that it was only $1100 compared to the $3200 MBP.

Oh, I've actually reduced my dongle usage to nil with the Mini because it includes ethernet and an extra HDMI port. My plugged in accessories are 2 monitors (1 Thunderbolt, 1 HDMI), 1 monitor USB, & my phone. So I still have 1 Thunderbolt free for a dongle and/or external SSD if necessary.

Just ordered a 16GB 1TB from Amazon, cheaper than anywhere else.
