This! Enjoyed 95 and 12 a couple weeks ago. Been a few years since I actually went into Bryce, Capital Reef, the Burr Trail and 12 are beautiful scenery.

I didnt think to recommend the burr trail. I rode it on a non-motorized bicycle tour some years back. Some is paved, some not. if that's your cup of tea, its an extremely high reward route.

It adds a major adventure upgrade to your route - including a ferry crossing, some gravel road, and a whole lotta solitude.

Doing that would look like this -- modifying your route from panguich to blanding

Glacier National is a must see. This might not be open in time.

Southern Utah is another mentioned and is worth the time. Zion, Bryce, Arches, etc. are photo album fillers.

And if you are going as far as Yellowstone, the Big Heads are just a little further. I'm not usually awed. Thought seeing it in pictures was enough. I was wrong. Awesome.

PS- unpaved roads will also be many Interstates and major highways. Summer is the only time road crews and fix up the concrete and asphalt. You are going to encounter chip seal, temporary gravel sections, freshly oiled (and sticky) asphalt and delays/detours. That's summer in snow country.

If it's open, you have to take the Going To The Sun Road from West Glacier, past Lake McDonald and St. Mary Lake.

Enjoy the Moki Dugway! On the Burr Trail I rarely go all the way, mostly just the paved section East of Boulder on 12. The ferry at Halls Crossing was closed recently, I thought it was due to wind, I’ve only taken it once preferring 95 to get to other roads. I’m still recommending Utah 12 at Torrey over US 89. I can’t recall what’s on 89 always making time for 12.
There are so many side options that it requires another trip.

rodr- link I posted noted the Road to Sun has yet to be fully cleared. Agree that it is a worthy journey.

I was in this area last August.

If you have the time and have already gone that far I'd go north from St Mary and go to Banff and Jasper.

Anyway, that road on the East side of Flathead Lake is nice. Very difficult to find camping.

Rising Sun is AMAZING. Campsite at Apgar lake in Glacier was nice, 10 minutes from East Glacier Village and free showers.

Beartooth Highway (212) from Red Lodge into Yellowstone also Amazing. There is camping just past Red Lodge on 212.

I chose to go to Canada, Glacier and Yellowstone in August and save Monument Valley for cooler weather. If I were you I'd head North rather than South in the heat.

The night before crossing Nevada I stayed in a hotel. Meaning I didn't have to pack up camp could get an earlier start. I left Utah early morning and was in Winnemucca for lunch.

Canada tips
Highway 3 through Fernie is nice. 93 from Kootney to Lake Louise is nice, 93 from Lake Louise to Jasper is on par with Road to the sun or Beartooth Highway. Jasper to Clearwater is Awesome too. Camping is more difficult to find in Canada. Don't under estimate the weather, even in August. I used both my heated grips and Hippo Hands and was glad I had them.
