I have a friend doing an overland conversion to an Astro AWD van that looks like it will be pretty cool.

Well crap. I asked for Monday off from work so I can go camping, not realizing it's freaking Memorial Day weekend and everybody and their mothers will be out there too.

Anybody know if any of the passes are open yet?

Because we all know damn well they're not going to bring it to the U.S. and take sales from the real Raptor.

Not that I've heard. They were just getting snow in the Sierra's a few days ago.

I think I'm just gonna bum around Los Padres NF and see what I can see.

I kinda wanted to play in the snow before it all goes away but I've got a winch sitting in a box at home (waiting on my front bumper) and with my luck I'm gonna get stuck out there all by my lonesome.

Well made the best of it. Didn't make it to Los Padres NF until well after dark and drove around those forest roads at night trying to find a spot. Lots of campers out there too. Finally found a spot about 200 yards away from the nearest neighbors and set up camp.

Sitting by the fire, dog on my lap, staring at the stars after dinner.

The boy is ready for bed.

Movie before bedtime on my projector.

Rained like hell around 3AM and made me regret I didn't put up my awning but I wasn't getting up. Not a bad site to wake up to.

Drove around the Forest Service roads for a bit scouting out cool spots for future trips then headed for the lakes. Lake San Antonio was cool but not my scene, same deal with Lake Nacimiento. Stopped for a couple of hours to bask in the sunshine and cook lunch but then it started raining again.

Lunch.

Walked around Morro Bay for a bit.

Said hello to the elephant seals.

Big Sur is definitely more fun on the bike.

Got a little mud on my tires on Old Coast Rd (when did they close it to the public?).

Brief stop in Carmel Beach to throw the ball around.

Finished it off with fresh strawberries and a strawberry/rhubarb pie from Gizdich Ranch.

They'll close the road to non-locals when it rains to keep tourist and non-4WD vehicles off the muddy road.

Ahh, understandable. That first mile or so was pretty well churned up already. I was afraid I was gonna get stuck at one point.

OK, what am I missing here. I know you are taller than me I can't fit to sleep in my 5' Frontier bed. How do you?

Also at overland expo I saw a setup that I really liked and looks affordable. Tent, plus the remote lift, plus the cap around $3k. This allows me to have the tailgate down and I have plenty room then.
