Please post sage advice for people turning 40 years of age.

What did you wish you learn by the time you were 40 year old?

Guitar.

The wisdom of my parents. I got that but a bit later.

How to excel at my job.

How to excel as a parent.

Very nice.

What I've also realized is that things turn out alright in the end. Trust the process and don't sweat the small stuff like Butch said.

Realize that you only control you. No one "makes" you angry/sad/... you are choosing to respond to them with that emotion. You can just as easily choose to respond a different way, including ignoring them.

And

All behavior is motivated. You are the center of your world view and other's actions toward you are generally attempts to get you to do something for them. Understanding what they get out of it, helps you understand them a lot better.

The best performance upgrade is upgrading the operating system of the operator. It is cheap, easy, fast, safe and works on every bike you will ever ride.

Don’t post stuff on the internet that you don’t want your parents, or kids, or lovers to see...
Or potential employer. Or the man.

I had learned that the sum of psychological misleadings growing up needed to be corrected. I grew up in a loving household, but mistakes - and energies applied to certain things - were made along the way that guided me onto paths that did not result in good decision making (mostly relationships). Through reflection, I noted these things and made the decision to not allow them to pass on to the next generation.

Here's an example: Some ethnic cultures (like mine) are heavy into shaming. I remember I had a major crush on a girl, and my mom's reaction was to shame me for it. I witnessed shaming in many forms growing up from my grandfather and among my relatives. Shame and gossip. This incident, as small as it may seemed, was integral in my poor relationship decisions in my adult life. I realized that when I turned 40.

Recently, my 10 year old step son called a "family meeting" to tell us he liked a girl. I took this opportunity to make him feel good about this, happy, excited, etc. and eliminated all possible shame. I wanted to inject joy into this event, so that later, his feelings toward relationships are without negativity.

I want to cut this disease out from the line that has been plaguing my family for generations. There are others, and they may seem trivial, but they do have significant consequences. In other words, don't ignore small, psychological "moles" on your back. Get them checked and removed.

I'd say forty is when you learn to accept Male Pattern Baldness.

Appropriate thread for Memorial Saturday.
Some good stuff here, didn’t expect to find the meaning of life on BARF. At each decade I marvel at having made it and the joy along the way.
Happy Birthday!

On the tail of that, it’s a good time to start your old guy hat collection!
