HuaWei CFO Arrested in Canada Facing Extradition to US

https://www.cnn.com/2018/12/05/tech/...ada/index.html

HuaWei is the most powerful tech company in China with links to the Communist regime. This woman is the daughter of a major OG in the Party.

This is like the son or daughter of Tim Cook and Eisenhower getting arrested in Korea and being extradited to China. It's literally a punch in the face of the elites in China that are supposed to be untouchable and now it's the talk of all Chinese nationals. More shit to hit the fan in 2019 ...

Tired of Chinese spying and counterfeiting. Invent your own shit. Or have decades of communist rule eliminated your creativity?

I don't blame them for that. It's most likely an effort to be more accepted here, and to seem like they might be second-generation (even if they aren't).
And also to avoid hiring discrimination.

And to avoid the constant "Where are you from?" from people with weak conversational skills.

Per the NYT last night, the allegations are that she was involved in violating US sanctions on Iran.
If true, it seems there are lines that the Masters of the universe can't be caught crossing.

Kinda fucked up that one nation can decide two other nations can't trade with each other and arrest a foreign citizen for doing just that.
If the US decides to send arms to Iran to fund some rebel fighters in Nicaragua they sure as shit aren't going to ask for China's permission.

From the NYT:

The heart of the charges related to how Ms. Meng may have participated in a scheme to trick financial institutions into making transactions that violated United States sanctions against Iran, they said.

Ms. Meng had “direct involvement” with Huawei’s representations to banks, said John Gibb-Carsley, an attorney with Canada’s Justice Department.

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/12/07/t...hou-fraud.html

So, do business in the US, with US financial institutions, and commit fraud and violate US sanctions, damn right the US has jurisdiction.

I'm just happy that the gov't appears to go after executives very evenly and fairly, like maybe they didn't want to go after this person for fear of damaging relations, but they did it anyway because it was the right thing to do.

I think it’s a power play from within China. The lady is getting too big for her britches and needs to be reined in. Also serves as an example to anyone else who thinks they hold more power than Xi in China. If this weren’t the case there is no way the Trumpster DoJ would go after her.

Do you have any basis for suggesting that? Sounds highly implausible.

Huawei gained their advantage by stealing IP liberally from US technology companies. This isn't just a Chinese government thing, its a Chinese cultural thing. In China there is no respect for intellectual property or trade secrets. They steal from each other, they steal from us. They just don't consider it wrong. Take the Micron incident, for instance; I believe they got caught because they were sharing designs externally, that used the exact same code words as Micron's design. It seems like it didn't even occur to them that what they were doing was wrong.
