Closing roads for recreation

Well I know some of you people on here can't discipline yourself to obey the rules of the road that exist for the safety of everyone. Which is unfortunate as motorcyclists as a whole are judged based on your poor actions.

So what would you think of something like the Nürburgring but instead of building something similar what if certain roads were temporarily closed for traffic on certain days? You would pay a fee and you had your go at the road and then it was the next persons turn. The fees would help pay for road maintenance, corner workers, and safety awareness.

This might alleviate certain peoples propensity to drive and ride recklessly since there isn't a safe regulated outlet for such behavior outside of doing a track day. The government should really step in and do something, because the current system we have isn't working.

I love Pie in the Sky!!

Would be awesome, but so unlikely to take shape.
Donner run was cool in the day. Pikes Peak gets some, but public roads are public for a reason and getting any chance of closure that would limit residents access would be pretty much impossible IMO.

I like how you think though!

What system isn't working? We have roads that are shared by cars, bicycles, motorcycles, walkers, runners, moms pushing Bobs, kids on skate boards, etc....
We all seem to coexist pretty well.
Closing roads for the ricky road racers? Are you dreaming? That's why we have track days.

Public roads are closed all the time for events. Marathons, triathlons, bicycle races, parades. For motorcycles? Dream on. The insurance , if you could even get someone to underwrite it, would be astronomical.

Not just motorcycles, for cars too. It would be drive/ride at your own risk.

I did this once.. https://www.sscc.us/

Road rally, road closed for 90 miles, pick a speed class and try to finish on the exact time. other states do them too. It would be pretty boring on a bike though. I was bummed that my car's cruise control doesn't work over 100 Mph

So instead of driving to a race track and paying for the privilege of driving/riding fast on that 'closed course'; you'd drive to a closed section of roadway and pay the price of admission for the privilege of driving/riding fast on that 'closed course'?

Do I have this right?

Yes but the cost per go would be less than a trackday and the chance of there being a participating road nearby might mean there would be a less of a trek for such recreation than going to your local track.

I would interested in seeing your cost analysis.

All sorts of events close roads. They close sections Mullholand in Los Angeles to film car ads and movies all the time. Movie money make miracles.

This was the first thing that actually came to mind when I bought my (losing) $1.6 Billion lotto ticket--

Close off Mines or even just Redwood for a Bay Area TT.

Too bad we can't have things like the IoM TT in the USA. Too much liability for our litigious society. Here there's no such thing as 'reasonable efforts to make safe' or 'ride at your own risk'

That's why we have race tracks. Unfortunately not any around here though =P It's safer to go fast on a race track than a closed street. I'm a big fan of touge or mountain passes but you really shouldn't be pushing your limit on a mountain pass it's less of a controlled environment.

I guess one thing that comes to mind that is similar is Pikes Peak internation hillclimb, they close the mountain road and race up it.
