Distracted Cellphone drivers

I've noticed that cellphone usage while driving is getting worse. Usually I go about my merry way, but twice yesterday, while lane splitting, the car next to me started drifting into me and both times they were texting/browsing on their phone. Other than taking evasive action and wagging my disapproving finger at them, I felt powerless to do anything. If I film such behavior and get their license plate, can I give it to law enforcement? Is there any precedent for a traffic violation ticket that can be sent to the cellphone offenders? I feel like if the CHP wanted to meet their ticket quotas, all they would have to do is have a few motorcycle cops lanesplit during rush hour and nab cellphone users. It is an epidemic that is only getting worse. Thanks for listening to my rant.

Just agreeing with you on all counts.

I doubt the Police will take action on vids.
I can move this to the LEO forum if you want more LEO's to see it.

Giving a video to a LEO, will do nothing, thankfully.

Don't think anyone would want to live in that world.

Don't FUCKING start me on how distracted cell phone users can be dangerous and knock you off your 2 week old motorcycle and then you have to wait months for new parts because it is such a new model.

I hear riders complain about cellphone using car drivers being distracted...

and yes they are.

I have been riding on the street legally since 1979 and illegally since 1977.

Drivers did not see us motorcycles any better then than they do now.

The reasons/distractions might be different but the facts are the same, they don't see us, they never will see us like they should, mostly because they are bored and we are not a imminent threat to them.

Facts are that most car drivers view driving as a boring chore required to get from point A to point B and they HATE it and would rather be doing something/anything else.

Phone/Internet is much less boring than driving!

I am not excusing distracted driving and I am not saying it is correct.

I am saying, this is what I have observed over the 40+ years I have been riding on the street and car drivers not paying attention hasn't changed much at all.

They don't see us, they drift all over the road, etc.

This is the way it is.

Getting wound up about it is, in my view, as useful as getting wound up about finding mail in the mailbox when you get home every day.

Getting wound up about it just hurts you.

Expect they don't see us and will drift all over the place, plan to evade them and ride past them, using your evading plan, if necessary.

and live a much better, calmer, more enjoyable life.

The best performance upgrade is upgrading the operating system of the operator. It is cheap, easy, fast, safe and works on every bike you will ever ride.

This has already been discussed in the LEO forum and the LEO's there generally believe that there is no way anyone would try to prosecute such a minor thing based on video evidence. It would take too much time for several different people to issue a ticket and prosecute it They have more important things to do.

Where I currently live it is legal to talk on a cell phone while driving, but not to text. But people still do it here anyway.

Can we start a thread about Prius drivers? They scare me too.....and women putting on make-up....one almost hit me one day.
Sarcasm aside, as long as you don't get too complacent you'll be fine.
As said before, people were trying to kill us long before cell phones showed up.

We live in a very dangerous time to be on the road: Almost everyone is distracted, and almost nobody has a self-driving car.

I'm not super excited about self-driving cars, particularly since it appears they haven't totally figured how to deal with lane sharing motos, but I'm close to the point of preferring artificial intelligence over the humans out there these days.

It's not just the cell phone, it's the disconnected self absorbed unique snowflake twatwaffle person holding the phone. Hate to sound like the old person that I am becoming but being born and raised in this valley I, among many many many of my peers, notice the change in just simple manners yet alone values of this new world.

One of the main reasons I do not lane split. Plus, I'm never in that much of a hurry to put myself in that sort of jeopardy.
