Ride report...Dirt roads into and out of Yosemite that bypass the gates!

My buddy (FJ09) and I (1290SAdv) took Friday off and did a little ADV jaunt into Yosemite from the Bay Area. I had always wanted to take dirt roads in AND out of the park.... it is possible!

Navigate your way to Smith Station Rd and Greely Hill Rd and head east... You'll find yourself here soon enough:

There were quite a few ruts on parts of the road which made for slow going for my FJ09 buddy. The KTM just plowed up everything as one would expect .

We came upon a rock slide. Someone put a "rock slide ahead" sign about 200 feet before the rock slide, which seemed pretty pointless.

I was 50% sure I could ride right over, so I did the responsible thing and just walked my bike over .

Passed this beautiful waterfall...

This takes you through the little community of Foresta then back on 120.

We got a heated tent cabin at Half Dome Village (it will always be Curry!). Got a martini and lunch at the Ahwahnee, hiked a few miles, then bought a bottle of whiskey and found a group of Aramark employees to spend a few hours chatting and drinking with.

Saturday morning we woke up early and headed to Glacier Point for this shot:

From there, we continued down 41 to Chowchilla Mountain Rd. You basically ride the little narrow golf cart path across from the Wawona hotel and it turns into Chowchilla Mountain.

Popped out along 49 and rode back to San Jose!

Nice I've ridden the tail end of that route starting from Mariposa after a Horizon's Unlimited event. I've ridden the beginning portion during the Yosemite Dual Sport Adventure ride.

I've done the dirt road ride in, no fee thing before. Went back the same way.

I think they check that you paid on the way out the gate? Meaning, if you go in for free, then ride out the gate, you got a problem?

The way I see it is you should get a reward for taking the adventurous way in.

A Byonics MicroTrak RTG.

Amateur radio based location tracking beacon. Transmits to the APRS network. It's like having a free SPOT.

I was up there a couple of weeks ago trying to do the same thing, but I ended up taking the wrong road at 5 corners and popping out on 120 about 3 miles before the park entrance. Being my first time riding that far off-road with this bike I wasn't sure what my range was so I opted to head back for a gas station. I would love to give it another try and make it all the way in, but I'm not really a fan of solo riding on dirt.
