I find it strange that KTM has 4 bikes on the grid without any real success to speak of and Suzuki only has 2 with Rins being pretty consistent in the Top 5 finishers.

I know it probably has to do with Red Bull and KTM willing to invest heavily in their effort, but the Zook is probably the 3rd best bike on the grid at the moment.

KTM only had two bikes in the top class until earlier today. They've only just finished their second season. Suzuki really stunk it up on their return and they had data to work with and got concessions, twice. Also, Bradley Smith and (arguably) P. Espargaro aren't on the same level of recent Suzuki riders like Iannone, Vinales (two years ago) and Rins.

Nope. I heard he won't until after New Years.

No, KTM wasn't able to field a test team in time. He will begin testing in 2019.

I knew all that. I’m just surprised that Tech3 went with KTM. Tech3 was a top tier satellite team very recently. It seems like a huge gamble to partner with a manufacturer with no success in the premier class.

They must see good things coming.
No doubt KTM has rocked the off road stuff and have commitment. This was year two. By five? An orange party?

Well I would imagine that Tech3 was probably part of Yamaha cutting back expenditures world wide. Yamaha was probably either thinking about cutting a program or looking for more money from Tech3. Or it could have been something with the Petronas deal that Herve didn't like or felt like they were either getting equal equipment or not something a 20 year relationship should have brought forward.

I think the success of Tech3 was probably a nice way for KTM to expand their program to an A and B team.

Keeping in mind Herve's position within MotoGP, I'm sure there were a lot of details being discussed behind many doors before leaving Yamaha and aligning with KTM. However, with KTM in Rookies Cup, CEV Moto3, Moto3, Moto2, and MotoGP, bringing up young talent is right up Herve's strengths and focuses, but now his farm system is much deeper.
