Huawei gained their advantage by stealing IP liberally from US technology companies. This isn't just a Chinese government thing, its a Chinese cultural thing. In China there is no respect for intellectual property or trade secrets. They steal from each other, they steal from us. They just don't consider it wrong. Take the Micron incident, for instance; I believe they got caught because they were sharing designs externally, that used the exact same code words as Micron's design. It seems like it didn't even occur to them that what they were doing was wrong.
What would the motivation be to spend lots of time and money INVENTING anything? Their system (historically) doesnt reward innovation at all. Take what already exists and that will do for people who have never known or appreciated what it takes to be the best at something for personal pride (or monitary gain). It was/is likely frowned upon except for when it suits the general cause...Comrade.

If true, it seems there are lines that the Masters of the universe can't be caught crossing.
The Iran sanctions thing is a known red line. No one here crosses it, because they know the Feds will crush them. In the last 10 years we've extracted huge (multi $B) fines from Aussie/German banks for violating these laws.

How are they subject to obeying those sanctions? Did they sign them?

For information: We have a VERY STRONG extradition treaty with Canada. You want strong extradition treaties. You know, so people can't just cross the border and go free on murder charges and such.

She and her company are not being charged with violating Iran sanctions, although the U.S. would love to charge everyone that doesn't agree with our policies. She is being charged with FRAUD for lying to U.S. companies that her company was not doing business in Iran. And THOSE U.S.companies could be charged with violating the sanctions.

This reminds me of Willie Clinton and how people didn't understand the charges against him. He was not charged with adultery or having sex in the Oval Office. He was charged with PERJURY, because he lied about being adulterous.

The Chinese are never going to say that. They like money and they don't care how they get it.

We would completely deserve anything fiscal that China could do to us and I hope they play the card so we can learn the lessons needed to prevent them from being in such a position again.

China doesn't need its largest trading partner? Yeah you might be the one who's misinformed.

Everyone is right.
China did buy all the U.S. bonds during the '08 recession. And got us and Europe through a rough patch. The Chinese economy would crumble without the United States. If the costs of Chinese manufacturing and shipping get in line, they will be in trouble anyway. The Japanese, etc., are doing business all over Asia. China is not exclusive with cheap labor and skilled help. And finally, what would the Chinese do if the U.S. said "stick-it, we ain't paying for our bonds". A nuclear war? Sue us in Prague? Not many options, really. It's a gentleman's game with really big weapons.

"Huawei said she faces unspecified charges"

I thought when you arrested someone, the authorities had to say what they were being arrested for. Seems like a human rights violation.
