Sherman Pass right now

I'm going to find myself near the Ancient Bristlecone Forest on Sunday as part of a weekend Yosemite run I do with some folks every year. I am tempted to take Monday off and stay in Lone Pine or thereabouts so I can bag Sherman Pass as part of a (long) ride home. TO be fair the return trip if I stuck to the plan Sunday would be over 500 miles anyway so, dammed if I do, dammed if I don't.

As far as I can tell that road is paved the whole way, don't care if the pavement is bad, that's why I have a Hypermotard, just don't want the bike sucking up lots of fine dust on a dirt road since I don't have the right air filter for that.

It does look like smoke from the fires in Sequoia National Park could be an issue. Alternative would be to just plan a weekend ride out there this fall and tack on the surrounding roads which also look amazing I guess.

If I don't do this, the way home would be up 395 to Sonora pass and then slog home to SF most likely.

Sherman Pass is paved the whole way. There tends to be some sand and small rocky stuff in some of the turns on the downward western slope but nothing unusual. I'm assuming you'd come down through CA Hot Springs (since the roads through the park are closed) and down through Porterville? I would avoid 99 like the plague. Tons of trucks, road construction, and it's incredibly hard to split there. You could always cross the valley via 190/43/41 to 33 through Coalinga and then up through Clear Creek-Coalinga Road and up 25...or various other routes through the San Benito Valley.

I just did this in June from Bishop up to the bristlecone pines. Then south to Nine Mile Road, over Sherman Pass! Road was perfect! Very little debris!

We ended up in Santa Barbara, too south for you.

A good route would be when you come to Bakersfield, get on 46 to Paso Robles, lots of options from there! I would follow the roads to go to Nacimiento Lake and San Antonio Lake.

You can then get to Carmel Valley road to the coast.

All depends on your time frame for sure.

Probably do something like this to get home - Pearsonville > Sherman Pass > CA Hot Springs > Coalinga > SF

If I had all the time in the world it'd be fun to take 178 > 58 to Morro Bay and then take 1 up to SF, but that'd be JUST a bit much for one day :-D

Air is looking pretty gross in the area though, and I already make wheezing noises when I breathe sometimes (I should probably ask my doc about that) so tbd, I might put a pin in this for later in October or something.

Well, I tried, and confirmed at the corner store in Kennedy Meadows that they'd closed the road due to the growth of the fire. Turned around and took 178 to 155 to Kernville. One of these days. Tomorrow I'm thinking CA 155 > CA 229 > CA 25 to SF but I feel like there are better goatier roads past coalinga that my phone won't show me. Open to suggestions, I could always take the coast and enjoy a low traffic Monday, but I do e joy crappy pavement.
