Been looking at these as well. From what I've read, first gen has carbs and second gen Fi? People say the carbed bikes have more power. Any truth to that?

Yes first gens are carbed and second gen have FI. The first fens also have a larger tank and bigger range.

FZ1 or FZ10?

There are two totally different machines.

You may be in luck if you're still looking. I've got a 2008 FZ1, 16k miles pretty clean (scratch on one fairing from a parking lot drop).

Added a top case and frame sliders, stock otherwise. About to put it up for sale. LMK if you are interested.

Nope.

Newsflash: One of these things is not like the other.

When I lived in the City, my downstairs neighbor had a silver FZ-1 that he rode to Burning Man several times. It looked like this:

The FZ-10's name was changed to MT-10 in 2018, when it gained a QS and slightly revised throttle mapping & redone engine modes. My blue/black 2018 MT-10 is my daily ride.

The most significant is that Yamaha introduced the CROSSPLANE technology in the FZ-10 from the R1/R6 engine platform. FZ1s never had crossplane.

That red '08 is cherry. I love my '08 with lots and lots of miles.

2nd gen weighed more, made more power, got less mpg and had a smaller tank.

I owned several gen 1s and rode a few gen 2s and did not care for them.

My FZ09 is much superior to the gen 2 FZ1, IMO.

Before they announced the FZ09 I was building my own FZ1 based on the 04-06 R1 but I abandoned that project and bought the FZ09 and am very pleased with it and like it a whole lot more than the gen 2 FZ1s I rode.

I have not ridden the FZ/MT10. It does not appeal to me for too many reasons.

If I were buying the FZ09 right now, I would also include the KTM 890 as an even lighter bike with great power and torque. The new MT09 looks interesting too.

Neither did the R6. The FZ/MT-09 triples were crossplane designs though.
