Question for you Rel: after going over Hwy 88 and 89 (eastwards) on Saturday, I went over Sherman Pass (westwards) on Sunday, and confirmed my impression from last year that there is no posted speed limit anywhere on Sherman Pass Road, all the way from Hwy 395 to Hwy 190.

In situations like this, does it mean that the speed limit is the default 55mph? (I suppose the alternative is too good to contemplate).

I'm not familiar with that road, however, any 2 lane, undivided roadway is a max speed of 55.

I rode 108, 4, 88, and 120 two weeks ago.

120 was slow with the speed limit and traffic. They were doing roadside tree removal which delayed us by about 10 minutes.

108 was great, I passed 3 cars and no LEO presence. Saw 6 deer, 4 under a tree on the side of the road and 2 darted across in front of me.

4 is a tale of two roads, from east to west it is tight and technical and then fast sweepers. 3 cows in the road after a switchback. They didn't flinch as I split them. Just east of Arnold there is road construction. 1/2 hour delay.

88 is fun, up until I came across the moto fatality. A couple on a Harley hit a van. One fatality, one lifeflight. Delayed about an hour.

Monitor pass was beautiful with the aspens turning. Markleeville is a great place to eat, temps in the 70s midday but fall is going to hit any day.

No snow, except on the peaks.

That road is interesting because although it is wide enough to be a 2-lane roadway, a significant portion of it does not have a dividing line (I suppose it's so desolate that they didn't bother with lane lines), so technically it is a one-lane roadway. Would the speed limit still be 55mph in those portions?

Last week the weather was perfect and the roads were in great shape. Some minor road work going on heading up 120 out of Yosemite otherwise stellar.

Thanks Lou,

The CalTrans site is reporting 108 as closed due to snow at the moment. It could well re-open by tomorrow, but you'll want to check:

http://www.dot.ca.gov/cgi-bin/roads.cgi

Hwy 4 & 120 are showing construction delays but no closures.

^^^ Yikes, that jives with what I heard this morning, at breakfast, asking everyone that came in, that are High country people...One said, that he had heard (but didn't know first hand), that there was snow, and 70-to-80mph winds the day before.

Doesn't sound good, and it is cold down here.

Interesting that Tioga didn't close, as it's higher. Maybe the storm didn't go quite that far south.

Went out 108 Saturday and came back 120 today after a night at the hot springs, rain and flurries up high yesterday but today was perfect coming over tioga.

It's beautiful up there right now.
