He just interprets the data from the forecast models into real world weather. And if it looks like he is going to be wrong he updates his forecast with information from the latest model runs.

Best time of the year to be up there. Cool crisp and sunny. No 100 degree days with traffic like an ant farm. World class roads and views.

4, 120, 108 all closed right now. My buddy in Bridgeport says they might open 120 on Sunday, but it depends on whether the snow melts off.
They rarely plow any of those 3 once the snow falls. Same with parts of 89.

.... will give you the latest. If you have to go to the Eastern Sierra this coming week, Ca88 is open, and won't likely get snow in the next 5 days.

Drove over Sonora this AM (Friday). Pretty much perfect, except for 2 places with some sandy crap left over from snow plowing.

Tioga opened up today at Noon. Can't give a report, but it's open.

I can say this, it sure is a perfect weekend to head up to the Eastern Sierra. Be prepared to freeze your ass off in the early mornings. So layer up and you'll be OK. Watch for ice in shady spots.

Bridgeport Inn and a couple others open in Bridgeport, CA. Most are closing after this weekend, winter is upon them.

Fishing was dead, on the Miracle Mile downstream from Bridgeport Reservoir, but pretty good if you head all the way down to Nevada where the water is more aerated.
Watch for CHP, too, seemed to be a lot of them around.

If the weather holds up I will be heading up again for a few days this week. Glad to hear Tioga is open.

In many ways, the Sierra passes are at their best, now.

Just carry (to put on or take off and stash) the thermals, as wanted.

Sand that was put down, as the storm came in..Got put in the sharpest/steepest corners.

Learn how to ride a dirt bike. Dirt bike riders do that slick snot, all the time.
And they look at the surface to pick the nicest line...

The snot can be right in the city, especially if it is wet...Ya need to know how to ride a bike,
then you can cope with whatever you come up on.

What are the passes like in April?

My brother and father are coming out and I'm starting to plan the ride. We'll likely go east or south, as the trip my dad and I did last time was north.

Ebbetts, Sonora & Tioga typically closed, but it wouldn't be surprising if Ebbetts & Sonora passes opened some time in April.

Two weeks ago, I'd have said,

"If you want to ride a mountain pass, head to Incline Village or Reno and ride 431/Mt. Rose."

However, given this storm, let `em work for a few days. Some snow to plow. But it is open year-round.

Certainly. But we can say "typically it's xxxxxx in April".

That's all I was looking for, not an exact forecast for the month of April.

That being said, I think we'll err on the side of caution and go south.
