What makes it a supermoto other than the wheels and tires? Does it have a cush drive to prevent the splines for being damaged on the drive shaft?

+ big front brake and usually stiffer suspension than the dual sport equivalent. I believe this bike comes with a slipper clutch which should negate any issue with the transmission bits. Damage from lack of cush drive is pretty rare.

The only ones I saw you can get are at least 5-6 hour drive from around here.

This is my next bike.

12 large OTD is terribly expensive for a last gen 690SMC.

Agreed, it's not cheap but what gets me is the whole 690 SMC thing. We had them in 2008, 2009, 2010.

NOBODY BOUGHT THEM. You could have one for $10,500 sticker.

Fast forward almost a decade. Ever so slightly refined version of the same bike plus ABS. Almost two grand more, everyone is freaking out and you cannot buy one at the dealer.

Where the shit were y'all... had demand been a fraction of what the 701 demand is now, we could've been riding 690 SMC-Rs now, the used market wouldn't the bubble that it is now, the aftermarket would've been stronger and the 701 MSRP would've probably been at least $1000/700 lower. Former 690 SMC owner speaking.

DRZ doesn't come with a cush drive. It's been on the market for 12 years?

Nobody bought much of anything in those years. The economy was very different than 2016.

You have a point, but something tells if you were to cross-reference 690 sales internally to the rest of KTM's offering at the time you'd see it was more of a cultural thing. Or take Ducati (another premium Euro brand).

Just speculating here...

DRZs do not have any problems with lose front sprockets, snapped output shafts, etc....

This thing is overdue for some upgrades. Its been around almost unchanged for 9 years. It did get a 50cc bump in displacement a few years back but this 701 is using what looks like the same instruments as the 2010 enduro. It was pretty easy to get dust inside the cover of those.
Still better than any Japanese options.
