Firearm training

Hi guys,

I'm thinking about getting my first gun for target shooting and home defense. Before I do so, I'd like to get some training. Any suggestions on where to go?

Without getting into it, I'd like to avoid any NRA sponsored training organizations.

Thanks in advance.

Target Masters West offers a beginners course. Not aire about the NRA affiliation part.

Depends on where you’re located.

Look up gun ranges that you are local to and then go talk to them There at least used to be a couple of good ones in the South Bay.

They are getting rarer all the time.

Dunno what your beef is with the NRA but ALL legitimate firearms trainers in the US start off with NRA certifications. It’s like the MSF, the NRA is the only organization that standardizes basic proficiency in firearms.

Try http://bayprofs.org. I’m acquainted with the guys that run it, we’re all in the same rifle club. Good crew.

I'm no fan of the NRA but I took their basic pistol course and it set in place safety standards that are now instinctual.

Like Scorpio said, it will be hard to find any training that isn't NRA related. That's what they did, a long time before they got into politics and legislation. Any non-NRA training will likely be non-beginner and they will want you to have the basic safety and handling skills.

OP, don't let the repugnant politics of the NRA leadership turn you off to the many decent members who joined for reasons unrelated to politics.

Think of it as like the Catholic churches which have many decent people regardless of the cut-throat politics, history and policies of the Vatican.
