Me too!

This guy was parked next to me at Portola Valley a couple of weeks ago and I had to take a snapshot. You ever just catch a glimpse of another dude's life and go "yea, that dude's living right!"? This was one of those moments.

No, I don’t do any “serious wheelin’” because I won’t do that with a $40,000 truck. My goals are to get out in the woods with my dog, spend the night around a campfire, and sleep under the stars. My truck and gear are tailored towards making that as hassle-free as possible and dealing with SHTF situations.

I get you guys about the fashion gear thing though. Have you guys seen the pics/vids from Overland Expo West this past weekend? I tuned out. Some of these guys are geared up like they’re going deep into the Sahara. There’s definitely some poser Kool-Aid going around but if they’ve got money to burn, that’s their business.

People need to stop giving too much of a fuck about what other people are doing. If a dude wants to drive his 8-mpg Defender to his accounting 9-5 in LA that’s his business.

+1 to all this.

I'm trying make time to do some easy car camping with my dog this summer this thread has been an inspiration.

You know I saw an FJ cruiser today with off-road tires and I wondered how capable it was.

Right up there with a Wrangler out of the box. It's a real bummer Toyota killed them but didn't replace it with anything in the same class.

The rumor that has Toyota fans foaming at the mouth is that they are bringing the Highlux, including a diesel version, to the states. There are also some mild rumors of a new FJ, because the money being made by FCA solely from the wrangler is very hard to ignore.

For Ford, it's a new Bronco that looked like it might have been a two door wrangler competitor... But the latest news deflated that a bit. They still have the modern Ranger, that has a Raptor-esque version coming up.

For pure off road, it's still hard to compete with the wrangler. But pretty much anything drives nicer on the roads. And the wranglers have squat for towing capacity.

I had a 1963 404.1 belgian*, which is a hotrod compared to what fxclm5 has. Tops speed was a whopping 54 or so and it sucked on the freeway. I miss it dearly but my 1995 landcruiser is a far more appropriate vehicle for basing a back country camping rig upon.

* a variant with drop down bed sides (awesomely useful when the bed is 5 feet off the ground) and some other stuff. Nearly identical.to the one Alan in the parking lot above. The narrow passage wants on the front are also an awesome option. I routinely parked it in "compact" parking spots since the week base is fairly narrow, and the doors open above most compact car roof lines.

I was just reading about this build, built on a Land Rover Forward Control. His camper can be jacked-up off the body and left behind.

I'd really like to get into this someday, probably go for a 'burb/tahoe/expy type vehicle so I can sleep in the back. I think the important thing is to not get hung up on some ultimate build and just take whatever you've got and get out there. Need to swap the air suspension on the expedition and slap some tires on it and go have some fun..
