Raptor 1st gen vs 2nd gen

Wanted to pick the kitchen sink's brain trust regarding used Ford Raptors. Looks like the price difference between 1st gen and 2nd gen is about $25k-$30k but the value retained seems to be solid. So far I have put together the following, what else am I missing?

1st gen Pros:
Big normally aspirated V8 (possibly more reliable)
Might be a future collector item
Costs less (but still a lot of money for a 6-10 year old truck)

2nd gen Pros:
More up to date tech
Marginally better gas mileage
Larger sunroof

I think it's really going to come down to preference and budget. Personally I like the look of the 2nd gen better, but the sound of the 6.2 with aftermarket exhaust sounds way better. The other thing to think about is fuel. The 3.5HO motor requires premium fuel, the 6.2, it's recommended. You can run both on 87, you'll lose some power with it, but a lot less loss with the 6.2 than the 3.5.

Personally I would go with the 1st gen. Cheaper and the V8is more reliable. I have three friends with the 2nd gen raptor and each has had turbo failures on stock motors. Plus if you wait until next year Ford is supposed to bring back the V8 with a competitor to dodge's (I know they are Ram trucks now) TRX hellcat powered trucks. That may bring the value lower for the first gens.

if you plan on having to comply with CA smog laws with the vehicle for a longass time, like long enough for the turbo to fail (which will happen, regardless of manufacturer) i'd go with the big displacement NA engine. eventually that stock replacement turbo will be impossible to find, insanely priced, or some combination of that. You could upgrade the turbo, but might run afoul of CARB which signs you up for a perpetual cat n mouse game as long as you own the vehicle...

so i guess i'm saying if you're going for a BRO-Truck, get the simpler one. 1st gen

Raptor without a v8 is like Ron Jeremy with a small pecker, there's just no reason for it to exist.

I feel you here. Simpler is better for long term ownership.
