This, you can thank Junkie after the trip.
Watch your time though. You don't want to do this after dark and miss all the fun. The section of Hwy 1 between Ft. Bragg and Leggett is sublime.

I approve. There is a little private inn at the first Leggitt exit coming north on 101. So if you came up from 1 you'd have to backtrack a bit. It's the same exit as the Drive Through Tree except on the North side of the highway. It looks like nothing would be out there. You cross a bridge and it's on the right. I think it's called Stonegate Villas or something. VERY quiet, very nice and VERY inexpensive. Has a garden area with hammocks. Warning, no food or TV. There is a good burger joint just up Hwy 101.

I agree FT. Bragg to Legged, one of the most perfect motorcycle roads ever. Several times I have turned around at Leggett sped back to the coast turned around and sped back to Legget and continued north.

This!

And if you can do it, rather than riding 101 in that area, ride the full length of The Avenue of the Giants. It's the old 101 and is absolutely beautiful. Use the little man on Google maps and put him down on various parts of the avenue to see what I mean.

Yup.

If you're on sport bikes, and it's your first trip, I will recommend you keep the daily mileage down a bit. By the third day, you might be happy you didn't bite off a huge chunk.

Highway 36 is great, but it's a long, long highway ride to Red Bluff. If you intend to ride it, I would suggest you blast up the highway on Friday afternoon and get a fresh start on 36 in the morning after some rest. Then maybe find your way down the coast or 101 a bit after checking-off 36 and make Sunday shorter than Saturday.

Something like this: Google Map

It's not too ambitious. It gets you out of the back yard. It will give you plenty of time every day to stop and take in the sights and still hit some epic roads. It will also keep you in the area of some fantastic riding which you can add to, or subtract from as you go. Without knowing whether you're a mile-eater or enjoy shorter more intense riding or even smelling the flowers, this will only commit you to one long, boring stretch of highway and it's out of the way at the end of the first day.

I will agree that Hwy 1 from Ft. Bragg to Leggit is awesome, and it is better riding south to north, so maybe if you have time you make a loop by coming down 101 to Willits then over to Ft. Bragg on Saturday, and start Sunday by riding back up to Leggit on 1 and then back home. Make plans for both then call an audible when you're there, depending on how you feel.

29-16-505-128 is also nice, and quicker than going all the way through clear lake and Calistoga.

Also, further north, exit 5 at Corning, and take Corning Rd west to Black Butte Rd - Newville - 306 - Sites/Lodoga, rejoining 5 at Maxwell. From there it's only a few miles to Hwy 20 as mentioned above.

Man, but the ride up 5 can be brutal. Even with nice temperatures it is a mind numbing drone, especially on a sport bike.

you guys are all awesome.
thank you so much for all the feedback, comments, and insight.

here is a revised route based on the additional feedback.

Day 1
29 out through Napa
128 through Boonville
All the way to 1
1 N up to 101 to Garberville
Day 2
101 N up to
36 E to Red Bluff
Day 3
5 S
To 20 W
Take 20 / 53 / 29 down past Clear Lake to Calistoga
Home through Napa.

any suggestions on 'must have' supplies?
trying to keep it to a bare minimum since all i am carrying is a backpack with some socks and underwear.

You want a real fun ride? Look at the map that boney posted - just north of Point Arena you'll see a road called Mountain View Road - it takes you over to 101 (eventually!). We took it with our smart car last year - I was glad I wasn't trying to negotiate it with our sidecar! The speed limit is posted as 55 mph (if I recall) but I don't think we ever got over 30 anywhere on that road...
