Little/Big Bike ADV short overnight to Carrizo

Eric B and I had a Little/Big Bike ADV ride for a quick overnight to Carrizo Plain.

Eric has the nose for routes and got us all the way from San Jose to Carrizo on secondary roads that were awesome. Because of the miles we had to do we didn't take a lot of pics, but we got some.

My Spotwalla for the trip -

It's the Little-Big bike ride because I was on my 1090 and Eric was on his KLX250 as seen in front of "old 67" after a killer run down 25 and Coalinga/Los Gatos Rd.

We were the Wolfman Luggage Pinup krew

Eric's KLX is sweet.

We snagged one of the last sites at Selby CG

Photo Credit - Eric B he calls it "1090 at sunrise"

Out on Soda Lake Rd, and look closely to see the remnants of a tumble weed Eric hit.

The brown Carrizo

After running Soda Lake Rd to Maricopa for gas we hit Elkhorn Rd for the way back.

Eric is a great tour guide and knows a lot about the area, stopping frequently to point out interesting things along the way.

The massiveness of Carrizo

The top of Parkfield Grade. Eric coasted down the paved section for six miles.

Two days, 696 miles, 14hrs saddle time, with the big KTM averaging 47mpg

F yeah! Looks like an epic ride. I've never been there before. Definitely on my bike bike list of places to go. Any wild flowers or has it been too dry?

There were very few flowers. They were there but you had to look closely. I want to go back and trailer the XR4 and camp/ride for a few days. Endless exploring options there.

Great pics Mike. That was fun. Old #67 has to be the mot photographed oil rig in CA.
The maintenance notes scribbled on the belt housing said 11.5 RPM for the drive unit.

Good stuff! Hardly a lick of green out there in early April! I was actually supposed to be out there this week, but circumstances killed that.

I did not track it. If you are handy with Garmin Basecamp or similar, Mike’s Spotwalla link shows the roads we did.
I could recite the roads as well, if you’d like.

I'm as handy with basecamp as it allows. Some days are better than others. Basecamp sometimes goes three sides of a square instead of A to B. I can check the Spotwalla link. Thanks for response. Scott

I did track on my GPS, and I'll try to extract them for you. I'll PM if I can get them off cleanly.

StonyBARF, April, 2021 ...

In the absence of the Sheetiron the last few years due to fires and Covid, I’ve been substituting StonyBARF events, which have been proving a worthy campfire/adventure riding/socializing substitute.

got to see some sunrise/sunsets with bananachunks and Guoseph, and do some old Sheetiron routes with bananachunks, Cabrito, stratslinger77 and Cincinnatus.

Guoseph racing up Saint John Mountain on his KTM 250 EXC-F to catch the sunrise on Saturday morning.

and heading back down to the Grey Pine group campsite for a cup of coffee.

bananachunks’ sweetly set-up CB500x ... he had shamed me into finally dragging the KLR to the tippy-top of Mt St John the evening before by scooting up the final ledges on his street bike, so I was ready when Guoseph lead the charge on Saturday morning.

pic is the saddle below the Goat Mountain gate, near the big Lettts Lake Recreation Area sign. The KLR performed well for me this weekend, with its fresh top-end.

and the sunset, near Goat Mountain.

Cabrito, stratslinger77 and Cincinnatus on Black Diamond Road, a gnarly old Sheetiron route that plunges down from M3 and Low Gap/Windy Point to Stonyford.

StonyBARF turns out to be a great ADV event, can’t wait for the next one!

some pics from bananachunks:

M10, M3, Black Diamond, North Fork loop, with Goat Mt, Summit Spring and Mt St. John spurs ...

near Goat Mountain ...

Excellent sunrise pic, John. That gravel up at the top was deep and so much snow in the Snow Mountain wilderness. Wanted to wait until actual sunset to go down but my head was getting really cold, was probably 30 at night up there, was 36 down in camp.
