Yikes, that stretch of 395 slab out of San Berdoo to Independence would be tough to swallow. I like the desert but sections of that are . Gotta time that one right too so you're not dying of heat or freezing.

Yep. I hate, hate, hate that road, esp the 2-lane section south of Inyokern. I suppose I could hop onto 14 instead, but that wouldn't be much of an improvement.

And yeah: weather. Besides the heat/cold, the wind is a big problem through there.

I'd much rather just pick the 10 best motorcycle roads and ride them all making a big loop of it. Connecting them with the most scenic/best route. That's what I see myself doing anyway.

Riding a bunch of crappy roads just to ride in every county, I don't get it.

That's a very cool route. I may actually do that one day, though, I've also thought about doing hwy 1 from San Diego County north as far as possible then eventually hooking up with 101 to get to the NW corner.

Hwy 1 is not fun in the summer with all the tourists. It also gets foggy. Winter time is usually much nice, in particular if you don't mind a little rain here and there. I haven't been for many years, just don't like to follow RVs at 25 mph.
