1976 XL 350 Vintage Baja Project!

Ok so there has been talk of a vintage Baja ride for a few years now and Iím starting to get serious about making it happen. Currently parked awaiting the sellers arrival, and in a few mins I should be the new owner of a 1976 XL350 with long travel suspension and a c&j racing frame. Itís been sitting awhile and needs a complete once over at least, but Iím super excited to get this project going. Pics coming later!

Maybe I need to change the setting in my album from private to public?

I've stripped all the plastic and 90% of the homemade wiring harness off the bike. Cleaned the carb, bought an new spark plug, adjusted the points by eyeballing it, put some gas in the float bowl and after checking the oil which looked new, kicked it over and of course being an old honda it started!!! Woot!! I let it run for a short time. It sounds good to me. Will dump the oil next and need to find an air filter for it, but seems like the engine will be ok for now. I'll probably still open it up and reseal everything and inspect the top end before baja. I'll post more pics manana.

Hey Daniel, is it cheating if you put an electronic ignition kit on it?

totally not cheating to put electronic ignition on a vintage bike ...
also the biggest tank I could find,
and a luggage rack for camping gear ...

I'd build a nice low-compression engine, when I had to ...

although the link to the hot-rod XR350 engine mods is rad ...

Sweet kind of makes me miss my old 250 but guess since it was a first year mono shock it’d be too modern.

You're going to change it from a center-port to a side-port?

Mine's in the attachment below. It's a real Bill Bell... 1978, 442cc. Bought it in 1982 from the original owner, who spec'd it, and sold it in 2012. It was my only dirt bike for 15 years. I mothballed it, and did a full resto on it prior to selling. Lots of NOS stuff. The forks are Simons, which I had powdered silver to look like the original Cerianis, and the shocks are Works, with powdered black springs. The Honda front brake didn't work at all, so laced up an IT400 hub (this was pre-disc-brakes). Wanted a speedo drive, so Steve Simons' guy Tom - this was when he was in a small shop off San Antonio, across from Sears in Mtn View - machined the right fork lower to accept the add'l width. It had all the cool stuff... bore/stroke, ported head, cam, Webster gear set, lightened flywheel, Barnett clutch, Lockhart oil cooler, 36mm Mikuni, huge K&N. Weighed 272 wet, and that motor was STOUT. Suspension worked pretty well after I had Phil Douglas re-valve it. And, it was fucking gorgeous!

Congrats on your new toy!

WOW OldGuy that is gorgeous! I hope mine comes out looking half as good!

I'm really excited about the bike. I picked up a uni filter for it today that fits nicely in the air box, dumped the oil, pulled the clutch cover off and cleaned out all the sludge from it sitting for so long, seperated all the clutch discs and soaked them in oil, reassmebled and took it for a couple loops on my cul de sac. I dont want to use the tank because it will just lead to needing to clean the carb again, so i've just been topping the carb off with fuel from a ketchup squeeze bottle. It was running a little rough, I think the pilot jet is too small or i just didn't clean that circuit well enough. It may also be that it has weak spark. Anyway I think I'm satisfied that the engine doesnt have some major issue, so I'll plan to pull it out and tear down the top end to see whats been done to it, and send it out to be freshened up and I'll send the frame out to be powder coated.

I'm on the hunt for different forks and shocks next.

I'm really excited to take this thing to Baja next year! Woot!

Well the honeymoon is over!

I pulled the top end off the bike to see whats been done to it. It has a megacycle cam, and a 84mm high comp piston. The cam has some wear, the piston and cyl look like its time to be replaced, and there is a small amount of wear on the top end of the rod. I'll be taking the cam to megacycle to see if they can do anything about it, and I'll take the head and cyl to EDCO for measuring inspection, refresh. Not sure what to do about the rod. I guess I'll be splitting the cases and dealing with that too. $$$

Also I'm trying to decide what to do about the suspension. It currently has betor 35mm forks and the shocks are toast. They wont rebound without help so they are done. I want more travel than the 7-8" it seems to have now. I'm currently torn about the following options:
1. 1978 ish cr250 forks. 35mm will fit the triples I have on the bike. Should be plug and play
2. 1983 cr250 forks and wheel, with twin leading shoe drum
3. 1987 43mm showa cartridge forks, remove the caliper mounts and keep the drum front brake because disc brake seems sacrilege!

I'm leaning toward the 1987 forks. Any way, I'll be pulling the engine out and stripping the whole thing down completely this week.
