It should be removed before the bike is ever even ridden.
The idea of buying a $10k bike that then needs a bunch or work to do what it should out of the box is very much less than appealing.

Jd tuner is $200, pull out the intake reeds and mesh screen from the muffler, free, and 20 minutes of time. Then the engine is right.
It comes with dot tires, which are usable, but not optimal for dirt, not a mandatory expenditure, nor is respringing the suspension, but they both greatly enhance the experience.

All bikes, street or dirt are getting more neutered from the factory having to meet CA DOT requirements.

You want a CA plated dirtbike?
Either get a new street legal bike and make it right.
Get a used plated bike someone already did it to.
Buy a non street legal bike and ride it off road or find the way to plate it. (Hello South Dakota!)

If you pick up a SD plated bike and want a plate I know a guy in SF. Charged $75 to get the plate for my 2014 WR450 last year.

Protip: you can register and plate anything with a title in SD without having an address there.

Yep.

If you then want a CA plate, you're better off with a bike that's never been registered in CA.

And then promptly have it impounded when the police catch you. And they will. The "South Dakota Loophole" is well known to all departments in California. Not the least of which, the CHP. But good luck with that.

Why would they impound my CA plated bike? I was suggesting he find a bike that's never been registered in CA, get a SD plate, and then turn the SD plate into a CA plate.

Hell, the day I bought my SD plated WR450, before I got the CA plate, CHP rolled past me on the freeway. Didn't do a thing. And that's even though I was wearing colors with San Francisco plainly visible.

Misunderstood your post. I'm talking about the people rolling around California with South Dakota plates. There was a segment done on the news (I think KRON) recently where they followed a DMV task force out chasing down people with South Dakota plates. Almost every vehicle they stopped was an exotic or Brodozer, but there were a couple motorcycles too.

Ended up getting an '05 CFR450r FMX bike and a '17 Husky fe501.

Because getting back into FMX is exactly what a 52 year-old should do...
