This is brilliant. Dean, how long have you been working on this, ten years?

Thanks Butch, no, only 6+ years.

I've talked to so many city, county and state officials I can't even remember. I've been to dozens of commission meetings at all levels, talked to two Mayors, County Supervisors, City Councilmen, Senators, Congressmen, the Governor, two State Park Directors, two billionaires and countless others. I tried to stop the Santa Clara County Habitat plan from banning motorized recreation on land they control but failed.

This is like pushing a boulder up a mountain all by myself. I'm close to the top but it's threatening to squash me. I really need to prove to the park and economic division that people want this park. They mentioned people wanting cricket fields. I prefer this.

I'd love to have a couple hundred people show up at a San Jose Park Commission meeting to show support. Cricket isn't even American!

Did I mention that the park would have a supermoto and flat track?

History of motor sports in the South Bay and Alviso...

The southern Bay Area and Alviso have enjoyed a long history of motor sports. According to the San Jose News, Aug 27, 1934, Alviso was the official site of "San Jose's newest sporting enterprise- flat track cycle racing".

Until 1989, the Santa Clara Police Activities League operated a popular motocross track on the west side of Alviso.

Nearby Baylands Raceway operated motocross and flat tracks at its bay side location.

There was an Alviso Speedway until 1963. The clay track was built in 1954 and was under the Western Auto Racing format. NASCAR's San Jose Speedway was its biggest rival.

The mud flats and levees throughout the South Bay, East Bay and Peninsula were used for recreational motorcycle riding and racing in years long past.

A legal and environmentally conscious motor sport recreation venue in this location would be a proper land use for the future.

signed, and put this in the comments section: Creating this park is environmentally progressive and correct. San Jose can, and should, lead the world.

Just got this from the city. I need to prove we want this. only 36 signatures so far :|

"...At that time, active recreation uses such as cricket, softball, soccer and other uses were considered having the highest community benefit because the community is chronically underserved with sports fields which require larger land areas such as this site offers".

Should we be talking to our councilpersons?
Yeah, cricket fields take up lots of area, and there are so few school fields available on weekends.

Posted on SBR? Have you talked to the AMA folks? I'll send a note to Dave Pickett... It seems like we should be able to get many thousand signatures pretty easily, but... herding cats is difficult.

Talking to your councilmember wouldn't hurt. The person they should give feedback to is:

Marybeth Harasz, ASLA, AICP
Deputy Director, Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services
City of San José

Yes, posted on SBR and LinkedIn. I don't use Facebook. I'm in contact with AMA leadership and they are working to help.

I'm asking San Jose to partner with and allow State Parks to open an interim park on a 40 acre plot already designated as recreation until the majority of the land designated as "flexible space" is available in 2027.

At that time if allowed, the park would move and the original 40 acres can be developed as ball fields. They say they weren't going to develop the park for ten years anyway.
