Angry More bike thefts in Berkeley

My Beemer (2000 R1150GS) was stolen from my driveway last week. No alarm, not garaged, it was parked in the driveway, and the fuckers chopped the steering/ignition lock with bolt cutters. Gone, not coming back.

I learned today that my neighbor down the street had his ST1300 stolen last week, too, and he found it a block away, the ignition wires cut and several fuses blown. Failed hot wire attempt? His was also parked outside, not secured to any fixed object.

These were both near Alta Bates, bikes visible from the street. I see so many bikes parked at the curb, and they all seem especially vulnerable to me now. People, take the care to wrap a chain around something and fix it to your frame, or get an electronic motion alarm... there's a series of moto thefts happening right now.

The bolded is the most significant factor.

If your bike is visible on a busy street, it's just a matter of time before it gets stolen. I have a friend whose bikes are parked outside on a fairly busy street in El Sobrante and he's had 3 bikes stolen over the years.

Chains/locks don't really stop them, I've heard plenty of stories of bikes getting picked up by several people and put into the back of a truck in less than a minute.

The best way to avoid getting your motorcycle stolen is to have it out of site from busy streets.

My 625SMC was stolen from Berkeley (half a block off Shattuck a few blocks north of University) back in 09, and that kicked off a total clusterfuck having to do with paperwork (it was registered under the wrong VIN, and another bike was registered under the same VIN)

Even thieves are not immune to old age.

I once left my BMW parked on the street in Alameda with the keys in the ignition for a week. Eventually I came home to a note from the cops saying "nobody wants this fucking bike, please stop trying to make people steal it."

Somebody had a KLR650 stolen within the past year. If a thief will take one of those, they'll take just about anything.

Maybe the thieves just needed the milk crate.
