I had two parakeets when I was a kid. I took no precautions and they lived years. I had to give the first away when we moved.

The cage is in a back room on the opposite side of the house from the kitchen. The only reason I think a new one will die is because two died already, and I don't know why.

Gerbil sucked! I was staying at a place and they had a gerbil. The thing jumped out of my hands and ran under the bed. I tried to slide a book at it to scare it back out and something happened. I didn't see it, but it came out running full steam and running into everything, bouncing off walls and furniture. Then it died!

I had a mini hamster. The thing was awesome, but must have had a neurological problem. I built a running wheel out of wire mesh screen and he would run that thing full tilt for literally hours non stop. He would stumble and fall on the wheel and make multiple turns he was going so fast. He'd jump off the wheel and come running at you and bite at the cage wires. He wanted blood. He was nice at first but something happened. One day it ran so hard I think its heart exploded. It just fell off the wheel dead.

Yeah I'm going to go out on a limb and maybe mention that pets are just not for you.

I wish it was up to me. OK? AND...

My parakeet, I kept for four years. That bird went with me to three corners of this country. I rode in a civilian vehicle thousands of miles with that bird. In the end, I could not take it with me and I gave it to my best friend, after two more years at "home." Nobody said it died. Of course it is now dead. It's well beyond its lifespan. I did not see its end.

The hamster went almost a year. I don't know.

OK, I know. I'm not posting because I don't know.

Fish! I've had fish for years. Two tanks!

Prolly I shouldn't mention the dogs...?

Yeah, I get it. If I listed all the pets that have died over my lifespan, you would think I was unhinged.

Now I want to try again but I have no idea why, or what is the most likely reason, these birds died?

I am aware of teflon and any teflon is 20 years old. Not sure if there could be other common household toxins.

It might have been the water - old 5 stage reverse osmosis and well water, with super high manganese levels.

Both birds came from PetSmart - they did not have favorable reviews on birds in particular. They had a lot of birds though and none died in the store that I could tell during this time. I'd look for somewhere else this time though.

Anyway, I am expecting 9/10 this thing will die again. Anyone keep birds?
any clues in here? maybe being winter, there’s heat from a furnace vent blowing too close?

Two pages and nobody asked whether they are true parakeets are not.

It's probably better that they died.

Otherwise, we would have huge flocks of soiled budgies flying about invading people's personal privacy.

Srsly, no ideas. Budgies are pretty tough. Not sure about true parakeets. When my son had a cockatiel, I found out that there was supposedly a feral flock of em that survived a Chicago winter. Blew my mind.

But yeah, fumes are what I suspect. You already mentioned teflon (I assume you mean non-stick pans heated too high). I wonder if there is some other kind of electronic device that off-gasses.

Or maybe you need to stop vapin, bro. Or your neighbor?

So are budgies and parakeets different?
I was going to ask why people interchange the names.

Parakeet is a generic term for a small parrot.
A budgie (Budgerigar) is a parakeet.
