SpaceX Test - Rapid Unscheduled Disassembly

We don't use the description of a failure/crash anymore.

Today's proper terminology is a Rapid Unscheduled Disassembly.

It sounds like the rocket blew itself up. It was at risk for going off course.

Why the heck is he trying to land it on a barge?

Seems to me the ground is a nice stable landing spot, & he can make it as big as he wants. Barge out to sea....no way!

The rocket flies east, so by the time it is ready for decent, it is a few 100 km off the coast. You only want to spend fuel on deceleration, not moving it back to FL. It does not have wings for glide back.

They can't land on the ground until they prove the steering works.
The ultimate goal is to return to launch site, inspect, reload and refuel within days.

My thought was, gee the barge is going up down/tilt/roll w/the sea; gonna be a hella time getting the rocket to touch down w/the platform doing that!

A parachute won't get the rocket back to the launch site.
Here's how the steering fins are supposed to work:

That's fine. Fish it out of the water, and tow it back.
That or make make it configurable as an autonomous glider once it separates.

Fishing it out and towing it back doesn't work for quick reusability.
They're plan is to have space launches as common as transatlantic air travel,
if a 747 flew from new York to London, then was thrown away, not many people could afford to fly.
NASA was able to reuse some of the solid fuel boosters after a dunking, solid fuel rockets are relatively simple, a tube with powder and a nozzle (skyrocket), Spacex uses 9 liquid fueled motors, each with probably thousands of man hours into it, once salt water hits them they're basically junk.
