I live in the Santa Cruz Mountains and there's not a trip traveling Hwy 17 where I don't have someone driving 65-70 MPH 10 to 3 feet off my rear tire. These are the fools that lose control near the summit and injure or kill people. Please CHP put down the Radar Gun and pull over tailgaters for VC-23103.

Thank you...

Why not just get out of their way?

There is no legitimate reason to increase your risk to yourself by staying in front of them.

When they screw up and run over you, you get hurt.

Staying in front of them is just plan poor a self preservation decision.

Riders don't control anyone else.

A rider only control the decisions they make in response to those around them.

The best performance upgrade is upgrading the operating system of the operator. It is cheap, easy, fast, safe and works on every bike you will ever ride.

This a million times. Similar to how I shake my head whenever I hear someone talk about how they sped up to get passed someone driving crazy, swerving, etc.

I'd much rather be BEHIND the idiot than IN FRONT OF the idiot.

I have only one question.
How long have you been riding?

First of all, no one is getting arrested for 23103 CVC for tailgating. That would be an infraction under 21703 CVC.

And like others said, you can't control other drivers so it's up to you to get yourself out of that situation.

Then you should arrest and book for 21703 VC! Teach those tech commuters a lesson they won’t soon forget!!

I once called 911 over an SUV with a lightbar and federal government plates tailgating everyone. I was in traffic moving at a decent pace, behind someone, and he came up behind me and was very close. I decided it was a good idea to let him past, and then he proceeded to do the same thing to the motorcyclists I'd been sitting behind. Probably 3' off the back of the bike, for miles. They were also stuck behind someone.

Unlikely anything came of it but hopefully something did. He also had a woman and kid in the car with him. Wouldn't have called it in if he hadn't been doing it to the bikes. And if it was a real emergency I imagine he'd have used the lightbar.

There are times when police want to get somewhere quickly, but lights and siren are not legally authorized or would be outside of Department policy. Just sayin....

Everyone assumes OP was just chilling in lane 1. It is not often you can "Just get out of their way" since 17 is two lanes and often looks like a rolling race grid before the green flag.

No, but it lets people know you are trying to go faster than them. I’d be lying if I said I’ve never tailgated to get someone to move over to the next lane so I can go faster and get where I need to be.

I have this problem all the time!

Why wouldn't you just flash your passing lights, instead of tailgate?

I think many tailgaters don't even realize how bad they are with motorcycles.
I get 9 out of 10 tailgaters to back off by just flashing my brake light 5 or 6 quick flashes.
If that doesn't work, I give them a big "back off" wave with my left hand.
If that doesn't work, they really are Aholes, and you just let them go ahead.
(and of course, if you were just holding up traffic to begin with, you should have gotten the hell out of the way in the first place.)

Also a good time for the PSA:
don't forget to check if your brake light is working every once in a while!
Easy to see it light up if you put your hand right on it
