He either fell in the "creek" if it was big enough to be carried away or drown in, or he was taken from the location against his will. Very sad.

This smells of possible suicide.
I truly I hope I'm way off base.
(...but the details of this are beginning to hit alarmingly close to home)

It does NOT sound like suicide. He had ridden west over Sonora Pass, SR-108, late Tuesday and texted his GF Wednesday at 2:00am (via Car and Driver):
"I had a great time before it got dark," Johnson texted. "That part of the Sierra is just stupidly spectacular. Anyway, I'm so sorry I worried you. Yes, I am okay and alive, but I am WIPED."
Another friend heard from him Wednesday at 8:30am when he texted "pictures of a stream that he was sitting near and said he was on his way home. He did not describe the location of the creek."

The motorcycle, on the sidestand, and his possessions were found off SR-49, 30 miles north of the SR-108/SR-49 junction in a paved parking area 50 yards from the Mokelumne River (see Google Maps link in my previous post), which is pretty big in the 12/2016 Google street view photo, and likely much bigger now.

In the 2005 suicide referred to, there was no indication of the rider's whereabouts. She had left her helmet on the side of the road before riding off a cliff, but it was picked up by a passerby, eliminating the clue she had left.

Still hoping for the best.

EDIT (6/10/2019, 12:20pm):
This story was covered on CBS This Morning and by ABC News.

Sounds like he may have gone into the river to refresh or wake up and got swept away? All the rivers and streams are raging right now and freezing cold. If you get swept away in that you only have a couple minutes before you go hypothermic and lock up.

Most of the time, when people leave their keys and phone, but keep their wallet/purse...which usually contains PICTURE ID...it's because they are 'missing' on their own accord. So people can ID them when they're found eventually.

Hopefully it's not the case and that he's found safely.

Was the bike found far away from his backpack?

Rider makes a stop to rest, leaves his helmet and gloves on the bike, and takes his backpack down to the creek. Someone steals bike and rider is left to walk back, but falls into creek?

Just trying to come up with scenarios where he didn't kill himself.

EDIT: Looks like they were very close to each other. No stolen bike in this case.

I sincerely hope he is ok, but IF he did slip in the river, there is a possibility he may never be found.

I knew someone that happened to in another river not far from there. Gone forever.

See Google Maps (link in my first post) for proximity of river to parking. It's very close. In fact, the parking area exists to provide easy recreational access to the river.

Updates from Car and Driver (same link I previously posted):
UPDATE 6/11/19: After concluding the search for the night on Monday, the Calaveras Sheriff and other involved parties requested additional resources for the search, which is continuing this morning. The GoFundMe raised $16,580, which will be donated to the Calaveras County Search and Rescue. Yesterday, the police found Johnson's wallet in a pocket in his motorcycle pants.

UPDATE 6/10/19: Search and rescue has continued through the weekend, with the Calaveras Sheriff's Department widening search this morning. The search effort is focused mainly on the river and Route 49, the nearby highway. A GoFundMe had been set up in support of the Calaveras County Search and Rescue operation, but it has now been put on pause after exceeding its goal.

[emphasis added]
From what I can see, there are no indications of foul play. Nor are there indications of suicide, so could we PLEASE stop discussing that unless and until some evidence comes up? It would be very hurtful to friends who might read it.

To me it seems most likely he went into the river and was swept downstream. Due to the delay between last communication (Wed, 6/5) and beginning of search (Sat, 6/8), it is going to be a difficult search, covering 9 miles of river between SR-49 and Pardee Dam.

EDIT, 6/11, 11:00am: Here's a news report from CBS 13 in Sacramento. It includes video of the river, showing just how brutal it is right now. The report also shows a still of Johnson on a bridge over a river, but it is NOT at this location and may be an old pic.

Above I quoted from Car and Driver:
Another friend heard from him Wednesday at 8:30am when he texted "pictures of a stream that he was sitting near and said he was on his way home. He did not describe the location of the creek."
Does the metadata in a pic sent from a cellphone include latitude/longitude? If so, does it stay with the pic if the recipient forwards it to someone else?
