Does the metadata in a pic sent from a cellphone include latitude/longitude? If so, does it stay with the pic if the recipient forwards it to someone else?
Tested an image my lady sent to me from her iPhone, to my Pixel. No GPS metdata.

Not sure beyond that.

I think that geological data is dependent on the phone it was taken on.
Androids are notorious for having too much of everything.
Iphones can have that portion turned off by the user for more privacy.
Check here for hints on how to extract it.

Does anyone know when the last cell tower ping was ?
That would tell a general location of where he was, but usually needs a LE Agency to kick off that type of search.
Hoping for a good outcome.

Not an issue. According to the Motorcyclist article linked by RightCoastBias they found the phone:
After summiting the Sonora Pass, in Northern California, Davey stopped off Highway 49 to swim in the Mokelumne River. He left his duffel, his helmet, and his gloves on the Honda he was riding, and the key in the ignition. Then he went down to the water, leaving his riding gear, his backpack, phone, and laptop near the water’s edge.
This is the first mention of "swim". Watch the CBS 13 news video of the river linked in an earlier post of mine. When I was young and stupid, I would go out on a 10-foot day at The Wedge in Newport Beach. But no way I'd have gone into that river.

Yea, you've gotta have a deathwish or an extreme case of havent-a-fuckin-clue if you think swimming in that river is a good idea at this time of the year. Hell just looking at the video gave me a case of the nopes.

Anybody else think it odd he left the key in the ignition? Anytime I'm going more than an arm's length from the bike the key goes in my pocket.

Ive been fishing and wading rivers most of my life. Even shallow, calm looking water can be treacherous and out right deadly.

In the spring the Sierra waters are frigid snowmelt. Only a few minutes in the 45 degree wate can cause hypothermia.

The notion that he would have been swimming at 0830 is odd since the air would still have been cool. Something doesn't make sense unless he was already impaired somehow and made a poor judgement.

I hope to god he wasn't in the water and there is a different and better outcome.

No news from the Sheriff's department tonight, just that they're continuing to search and will "exhaust all possibilities."

I know we're all anxious for news, but I'd expect that this will be the norm until something more develops.

As always, as soon as I have info to share I'll post it.

Thanks for being patient with this process as we search for Davey.

UPDATE 12:
4:45PM PT, Wednesday, June 12

Per the Sheriff, there is nothing to report from today's search, and the efforts will continue tomorrow.

As many of you know, the Calaveras Sheriff's Dept. put out a press release (link in Update 11) today, detailing the search.

As always, I'll keep this thread updated with any news.

UPDATE 11:
11:35 AM PT, Wednesday, June 12
The Sheriff's Dept has put out a release giving more details about what they are doing to find Davey.

Details are here:

His close ones must be going a little crazy right now. I know how it feels when my guy is just a little late. Hoping it all works out OK.

Search and rescue has halted their efforts, and it is considered an accidental drowning with no foul play.
Patrol boats will continue looking for him on a weekly basis.
Davey was a friend of a friend.

My most sincere condolences to his loved ones.

The cold water running off from snow melt can numb you in seconds, and the flow would have been very strong at that time with the sudden heat wave. Sadly people underestimate the strength of water flow in these short term rivers.
