1981 cb400t

I got this bike completely original and non-running, and out of the DMV system. Since then it has undergone a complete engine seal replacement, new clutch, rear shocks, fork rebuild, chain, tires, refurbished starter motor, kick start installation (not original- Honda in their infinite wisdom did away with the kick start in 1981), steering head bearing replacement, and new battery. I did all the things that need to be replaced in the long term, and it is currently registered in my name until June. It runs great! The only things that do not work is the high beam indicator and the speedo. You can get a used instrument cluster for around 60 bucks and it would solve both problems. This bike starts on the coldest mornings in the Santa Cruz mountains and tops out at about 95 mph. I know it doesn't look pristine but mechanically it's perfect.

Asking $1,200. Please do not make offers without coming to look at and ride it.

It was never meant to look nice. It's a rat rod for sure. I wanted it to run cherry and be dependable, and it does and is.

I'm almost tempted, but I need a racing budget and a dirt bike more than another rat.

I took a look at one of these with the spoked wheels and electrical problems and passed on it -- the comstar wheels are the way to go. Bump for a solid dude with the mechanical skills to boot and a good base for a tracker or cafe racer that doesn't break the bank.

Thanks y'all. It would be awesome to keep it in the family. Didn't you just get rid of an XR650R??

My first bike was a 1980 CM400t. Man I wish I still had that bike. GLWS!

Oh, it didn't have kickstart in 1980 either on the CM.

That is an excellent starter bike. My GF started on the CM400T.
It was probably '80 that the kick starter went away. Hers was a '79 and still had it.
