Just an FYI: The the Bay Area will be represented in the pursuit of legalizing the practice in Oregon.

Both Surj and I have been invited to be a part of the Governor's Advisory Committee on Motorcycle Safety discussions regarding motorcycle lane splitting/lane sharing.

There are 3 meeting scheduled for the balance of the year. First one is next week.

Pretty cool... I think I will share our guidelines as part of this. :teeth

Some insight into their take on it will be interesting for sure. Obviously the motorcyclist in Oregon that are pushing for this are making headway! :thumbup

:banana

I'm pretty jazzed about this. Last year it looked like progress was impossible in Oregon, and now this. Little tiny baby steps, but still.

I can't think of two better people to do this. :thumbup

If you get it passed in Oregon, will you please come to Idaho and help push something through there too? I'll be available there to help out in about a month. :cool

I'm quite sure states that Don't allow lane splitting. Riders still do it. It's down right Dangerous to count on a car stopping behind you. Lane splitting allllll the way.....

got yelled at pretty good by an old man here today for lane splitting down here in TX. He had a USMC hat on so i told him semper fi and took off :laughing

Portland resident here who lane split in cali a few years... sounds good in theory but there is no way in hell I’d do it here. Rush hour traffic is an absolute nightmare and everyone is mad as hornets. You wouldn’t make it 100 feet before somebody tried to block you or worse. I bicycle commute most of the year and people on a backed up street intentionally block the bike lane just to be a jerk.

Good luck, Budman and Surj! This is a good start to getting lane splitting legalized in more places!

While there may be opposition from drivers in Oregon, hopefully with the right campaign, they will see the benefits. IMO, it’s something that the populace has to see as a good thing or even if its legal, people would just run bikes down. That means changing a lot of minds. Good luck but I know you can do it.

To victory and beyond.

Hopefully you don't run into any anti-California biases. Some folks there might consider the very idea of lane sharing as some pollution of Oregon family values with Cali-commie-pinko-liberal ideas.

Fantastic!!!!!

If you need any additional company I'd be willing to join you all....not that I would be much of a help :teeth

Legalize lanesplitting

Make it illegal to impede a lanesplitting motorcyclist

Educate drivers on the above via new driver training, radio/print/tv campaigns.

Law enforcement to enforce laws.

Then, in time, people will adjust.

I agree... I think with any law like this a media blitz would be warranted.
I would think a law already exists for impeding another motorist on purpose and when the practice is made legal ( I believe it will at some point) then LEO's being proactive about ticketing for it you will see some change.

Outstanding. Getting chased down by people in pickup trucks because you moved to the first in line at a long light is crazy.

Anecdotal but maybe a compilation of stories about riders being threatened just trying to stay safe would help. Oregon, for all its public relations hype, isn't really all that motorcycle friendly. Its like the Grim Reaper wearing a clown hat.

I'm probably not the only one to feel the wrath of Oregon car/truck drivers when all I was trying to do was not be a wet spot between a car and a truck.

Don’t split then. It’s a choice, like motorcycling.

You underestimate how butthurt people in other parts of the country get about it. In New York, cops treat it as if you’re doing a wheelie through a playground full of toddlers. In the South, especially Texas, people will chase you down to yell at you.

To be honest I haven't really felt any need to split lanes when I traveled cross country before. I can understand why we do it in California because the traffic is crazy here. The only place I see splitting lanes useful is in highly crowded city areas. Also in Las Vegas, I swear you will die if you sit in traffic on a hot day in LV on a motorcycle. That being said I split whenever I can =P Most other countries split lanes like Japan, California is just ahead of the times is what I would say.

I get a lot of people who post angry comments on my youtube videos when they see me splitting lanes. It's like a culture shock to them.
