Hello,

I'm helping an estate sell a 2006 BMW R1200GSA which we'd like to get running before we put it up for sale. The bike is in San Rafael and has not been ridden in years—the last service record we have is from 2011, when it had 10k miles on the clock.

I've been quoted around $2k for all mechanical work (fluid drains and refills, valve adjustment, throttle body sync, etc) plus tires, but hoping to find a more competitive price so some value is recouped with the sale. Trouble is I'm not familiar with the area and can't find many nearby options beyond BMW dealerships.

Any recommendations for an honest, reliable shop would be appreciated.

Thanks.

You'll never recoup the cost of the mechanical work. If it's been sitting for that long, it will need more then basic service. Sell it as is.

Lawrence at LG Moto isn't terribly far in Richmond.

my thought as well. Put a battery in to show that it's electrically alive and maybe change the oil/fresh gas and see if it runs. Anything beyond that is likely wasted money

Investigating that option— appreciate your feedback!

The 3K unknown is if the Brake servo will work and stay working. Letting them sit for years without being used or serviced is their death knell.

Back when I had Sertao I took it to Marin Moto Works, it's in San Rafael at least. Living in SF I like Moto Lucia. Your likely to get better rates the farther you get away from the Bay Area. CalMoto in Livermore did another bike.

Looks like Marin Moto Works is closed, but appreciate your suggestion.

When you talk to a shop, tell them you just want it running ... not a full service, back on the road, ready for anything type of service.

Going from "hasn't been started in 10 years" to "runs but needs a good service to be fully road ready" will be a big jump in price.

So maybe $500 ish for an air filter, remove old fuel, add new fuel, new battery, and get it starting. Something like that.

And hopefully you don't have servo brake faults!

That $500 service might add $2000-$2500 to the price.

Ah you're right! I always mix it up with Marin Speed Shop/Hattar which is still open.

Sounds like you'll be trailering it to any shop- so widen your search- the farther out of metro areas you go, the lesser prices you'll find (overhead).

Ben's Motorcycle Works down in Freedom (near Watsonville- coast) has a great reputation and is not dealer prices. Plus, you get to go have lunch in Santa Cruz after dropping it off.
