9/11

Indeed the first responders were amazingly brave.

I am hoping that this date brings solid lessons in the high school history classrooms around the country.
Having grandkids that are just 20 and 19 there lives were not impacted by that day. Mike's vid link would be a great way to start that IMO.

That reminds me of my neighbor. He and the Urban Rescue team from Menlo Park responded to the scene to perform recovery efforts. Harold was actually in charge of all the efforts. Of course there were only tiny body parts. And the scene was full of contaminants. Most of the responders suffered lung and breathing problems that afflict them to this day, including Harold.

I thought about this today as I walked by the memorial in my little town. I remember that day so clearly but I wonder what day my kids will remember that clearly. Will it be something as tragic as 9/11? Will it be something as joyous as VE day? Or somewhere in the middle.

Every generation you talk to has a day. Kennedy, Martin Luther King, Challenger, OJ, 9/11

What day will my kids look at others their same age and ask, "Where were you?"

I hope it's something epic like meeting aliens that they celebrate and have drinks to honor for the rest of their lives.

Every on this day I take out my newspapers I got from the day after 9/11 and also the day after that.

My history teacher in high school at the time told us it would be a good idea. A few of them I wrapped up on 2001 to preserve.

One of those newspapers, I didn't wrap up because I read it every year. The pages I'm focusing on this year are the victims from the different planes that were Californians.

There's a short piece about the movie Collateral Damage with Arnold Schwarzenegger that was delayed because of 9/11 and some really weird ads that wouldn't make sense in 2024. But this was 2001...

There is a group that sets up a temporary September 11th memorial on a lot in my neighborhood every year. The Catholic school nearby has the whole student body walk over each year to see it and learn this recent history. I'm sure many schools do something like this.
