Alaska - The ride report

I gassed up, had some water and cleaned my visor. Maybe 2 miles down the road a few bugs died right in my line of sight, of course.

The road started getting rough, aka fun, and I had to remind myself that maybe using frost heaves as wheelie bumps was a bad idea. I eventually stopped for this shot, and the guys pulling a trailer that I's passed slowed to see if I was ok, I guess they figured anyone going that pace was gonna have a bad time, but I was having a good time. I thanked them for checking though.

But also, come on man!

I was wondering what the massive tear in the earth I was seeing from a distance was, then I crossed it, the Donjek River. This thing must rage in the spring.

A little while later, the afternoon showers appeared, initially I was gonna avoid gearing up.

But I gave in, Murphy's law, once I was geared up, the rain lasted a few miles and it cleared up. I was dry however, if a little warm.

Getting close to Beaver Creek, I turned around for this one.

Cool spot, good beer selection and a full bar, and the food hit the spot. Based on this sign I now have a desire to do a ride where I camp and use whatever a cook shack is.

I was initially the only one in there, but then it filled up. My neighbors for the night, who I passed on the way were a mom and son headed from Florida to Fairbanks as the son was now stationed there, we chatted while we waited for our food about the drive and whatnot. Then a couple from Israel who were visiting their son who lives in Skagway cam in and we introduced them to fried pickles and I talked their ears off. They were headed to Berkeley and the bay after this so I had a few SF suggestions for them. After that I paid my tab and took off. I'm currently posting this update from a picnic table outside my room. Not a bad day, even if the rain is starting already. No chance for northern lights yet...

Whitehorse ain't rural, they have an airport with full sized planes.

Didn't see any horses, but it sure was beautiful today, weather cooperated again, tomorrow, not so much, but ya gotta take the good with the bad,

Glad you're enjoying it, more to come shortly.
Agreed on Whitehorse.. Gateway to the north, not cheap to fly there either.. 1000.00 -1200.00 CDN return from YVR Airport. It's an International Airport so it's Oil rig workers, Resource workers, International tourists, it's defintely a major hub. If you ever watch Yukon Gold or Ice road Truckers it's what the real rural areas are like. Unfortunately only a couple Cell Carriers up their, and I worked on building one of them..Some international carriers don't roam on them...still some GSM, 3G, LTE/4G not much 5G if any. Well by the Time you head southbound it's going to be summer again in most of the province. Glad you made it to the Dirty Northern!!

Well, today was awesome, the weather was very cooperative, I think it was being nice considering it's gonna give it to me the next two days...

I woke uo at 7:30 and decided to start my day with the local institution. Walked there, so, no moto pic.

After some dawdling and posting on BARF, I got my shit together and hit the road. Skies were relatively clear and other than some showers forecast in the afternoon, it was looking to be a good day. Thankfully the route was short-ish.

After these few shots outside of Whitehorse I took in the scenery from my saddle in an attempt to make time. I eventually stopped (turned around actually) when I saw this cool old bridge by a rest stop.

I was trying to make time, but damn if the views didn't keep distracting me.

Full, warm and caffeinated I hit the road again, but first gas, and being a Saturday it was busy. Everyone wanted to meet each other, or maybe it was just these adorable pups.

All the gas stations I hit from Haines Junction to Beaver Creek were out of regular, but stocked up on premium, I felt fancy seen :laughing

But also I kept getting distracted by the views. I missed way more shots than I got.

I hope there is BARF sticker there now!! WOW ! you're getting beautiful shots!!! Man I love that area! There is a tip that if you go by the Destruction bay Research Stn during Summers, they serve Lunch and I believe tourist can drop in. Kluane Park is where they do extreme conditions testing at high Altitudes. Well you'll know what shots you're gonna want on the way back. This is a damn cool trip thread!

My ignorance displayed. So did some light research:

Whitehorse (French pronunciation:[wajtɔʁs]) is the capital of the Yukon, and the largest city in Northern Canada. It was incorporated in 1950 and is located at kilometre 1426 (Historic Mile 918) on the Alaska Highway in southern Yukon. Whitehorse's downtown and Riverdale areas occupy both shores of the Yukon River, which rises in British Columbia and meets the Bering Sea in Alaska. The city was named after the White Horse Rapids for their resemblance to the mane of a white horse, near Miles Canyon,

Thank you N4teTheGreat for another great adventure Salad.

Hey Chuck, This made my morning! Thanks for sharing that!! Tourism in the north based out of Yukon has boomed. There are ultramarathons, Norther Lights and Winter Festivals etc, that keep it busy all year round. The other even longer route thru the Yukon is up to Dawson City, another Gold Rush city. It's on the northern Border of Alaska.

I can't wait to see the pics from Alaska, as I haven't been there yet.

I wish I'd had anything to add, sadly no.
Surely I should have thought of sending a duffle bag of stickers. :rant
The Sikh moto spot was indeed worthy. :hail

Amazing stuff N4te. Damn... it is beautiful and you weave a good tale. :thumbup
Hope the weather is not to bad... onto Alaska!! :ride :applause

Chilly and wet today, as expected. Waiting to hear out around 10 as that'll be lighter rain and maybe a little warmer. 44f currently, I'll be layering up and activating the heated vest today! Internet has been spotty as well, strangely switching my phone from LTE to 3G seems to have solved the issue for now

Hey Nate, yes there is primarily 3G until you get near a major Alaska city. Hope that helps. Curious on your thoughts or if you have a Garmin In-reach ?

I've definitely got an inreach for emergencies. I was mostly bored sitting on bed staring at the wall waiting for the weather to improve slightly before heading out 😆 phone should auto switch and had been working on LTE fine last night so it was odd it didn't wanna play this morning 🤷‍♂️
