Anyone have advice for a new rider with picking the right type of insurance? I have Geico, Progressive, Allstate, State Farm, AAA, and Nationwide on my list to call and get quotes from. Planning on getting no collision given the bike's worth so little.

Bike is a 2007 ninja250 pregen, 25k mileage.
Not sure if joining something like AFM or AMA is worth it for the insurance discounts? Though seems like carrying UM/UIM is important for the bay area.

An another sidenote, if anyone has an easier way of explaining how types of insurance work in simpler terms, I'm all ears

If you can just do what they do… send an email enmass with your stats and needs. it might save you time

OTOH, it would be nice to have a provider that you could trust and would service your needs… but in today’s corporate economy, I don’t know

Nice to see another Z rider. It's been many years so not sure if their motorcycle insurance policy underwriting guidelines are still the same but the State Farm agency run by Machado in San Francisco used to just go by the motor's cc size instead of the type of motorcycle. For example, an R6 would cost less to insure than a Sportster 883. If their underwriting guidelines are still same, I imagine a 250cc motorcycle would be pretty cheap to insured relatively speaking. So if you're looking to save money, doesn't hurt to give them a ring. Their office was in the presidio area back then.

thanks Thumper for the link and the detailed write-up! exactly what I was looking for
We have agents and brokers on the site, it would be great if that old thread got revised.

FWIW, I carry the highest liability I can purchase, on all of my bikes including the dirt bikes. I carry comprehensive and collision with a $500 deductible on the bikes worth more than $5k. I have comprehensive on all of them and carry UI. And medpay
