Changes to Red/Green Sticker bikes starting 01/01/2025

Carnegie will be a little more chaotic for longer portions of the year.
Overall, I don't have a problem with it.
As a green sticker rider, I confess I enjoyed having the place to myself as much as I did.

@jeffc800 do you mind if I edit the thread title to 01/01/2025 ?

So you can't buy a race bike and ride it on public lands anymore?

Umm, no dude that's not what it says.

Enlighten us to what it says. As I understand it is all current a previously red sticker bikes are going to be green stickered, or can be used as of green sticker until green sticker issued. No new bikes since 2022 can be registered in the state for use on public lands, private lands sure.

Not sure some of you guys read or fully comprehend the bulletin as it's not a repost of old news from 2019, this is new and interesting news. It gives the now well-known history (to anyone into off road riding) where CARB ended the red sticker policy that effectively killed 2022+ MY "competition" bikes from riding pubic OHV riding areas, or so we thought. However, the DMV continued to issue red stickers on 2022 and later model years that were not green sticker compliant. This bulletin clarifies that Red and Green are essentially the same, regardless of model year, and they can both ride year round on public lands, "until further notice". So as long as your red sticker is current on your 2022-2024 (2025 presumably) red sticker bike, you're good to go.

The original rule was 2021 and older red sticker bikes would receive a green sticker and allowed to ride year round forever, but 2022+ non-compliant (red sticker) bikes we receive no sticker at all and could be impounded if found at OHV areas. But since the red stickers continued to be issued, it made things muddy for LE. This bulletin clarifies things, for the time being anyway.

I'm sure it was a revenue stream the DMV didn't want to give up, but part of me hopes it's just the DMV ignoring unelected and unaccountable CARB bureaucrats "law" making.

That is exactly what I had thought. They do away with the red sticker and everything is pretty much a green sticker now and there will be no more stickers issued to new race bikes anymore, so they can only be used in races or private land. I'm thinking they will issue red stickers till they run out and then it'll just be greens from now on.

You can always use the South Dakota registration ;)

Nailed it. đź‘Ť

No idea how long will this last, what changed allowing it, or even the story behind the scenes that brought it about.

I’d love an in depth explanation from someone in the know, how it came it about, and if it will stand long term (ie the about face on competition motorcycles.)

But it’s certainly good news in the short term for us offroad guys.

FYI, Received red sticker on newly purchased competition bike today despite two dealers stating I would not.

My understanding that Red stickers have been issued on all new "competition" dirt bikes thru present.
If you have a Red sticker you are now good to ride year round on public land.
That said, we bought our two strokes in 21 as we thought that was the last year to be able to ride on public land....Now hyper is considering a newer bike. ;)
