we did the Ms two wheel tramp/SFCootz End of Pavement Rally in Cedarville this past weekend ...

the last few years I’ve added a fishing license and some tackle to the crap I schlep on my KLR, and as the world's worst fisherman, I went fishing on Saturday in Nevada with my California fishing license, and found the one fish willing to be caught with a dry fly and a late '70s vintage fiberglass Orvis pack rod …

proof of trout in the Nevada sage desert:

Bolder Reservoir, with our helmets:

rainbow trout in the desert, who knew? Bolder Reservoir is maybe ten acres—and teeming with trout smarter than me, mostly. this one got thrown back, so maybe I can catch him again someday.

where we meet up, and camped for three nights—the county fairgrounds in Cedarville:

we had seven riders make an appearance and one wife—and two of the guys were just first-time lurkers, neither of whom had ever registered on a moto board. they just saw the thread title on ADV and said to themselves, hey, that's a wonderful part of the world, and showed up. how cool is that? :party

by tradition, the EoP Rally is farm rulz, show up or don't style--but we are not animals:

Mr m0t0_ryder's 50 cup coffee maker, which, also by tradition, he uses to add a tad of life's basic necessities. :laughing

the rocks he found from the local obsidian mines in the area.

I called in sick Thursday, and rode to Cedarville in a 400 mile day, and on Friday six of us tackled the famous High Rock Canyon—this is the the 155 mile "easy" route most of us finished our day with:

and here's a link you can zoom in on and see Bolder Spring/Boulder Reservoir (where Bob B and myself went back to go fishing on Saturday).

you can also zoom in and try look for the "hard" route the three real men took at the end of the day, which branches off at Grassy Wash, on High Rock Canyon Road, between Steven's Camp and Rt 34. :ride

this is what we were riding through on the way to Boulder Reservoir, and why finding water and fish was so surprising:

picture.php

approaching High Rock, we got to deploy the emergency-shade parasol, which I carry for just such exigencies:

picture.php

my plan on Saturday was to bale, but in the end I got sucked along through High Rock Canyon:

some 1852 graffiti left by the pioneers who used High Rock Canyon because of the abundant water. we had to do three deep, scary water crossings in the canyon.

High Rock kicked my fanny on the KLR, ouch. but I managed not to embarrass myself, yay. last time I ever do High Rock ona KLR, you betcha. :clown

you can just make out the 2023 Honda CT125 Trail that Mr m0t0_ryder used this trip, second bike from the left in the pics above. a total bad-a#@ he is, kept up with the group, and I could barely keep up with him. here's a better pic Mr CrazyCooter took. yes, Mr m0t0_ryder can ride circles around me, even on the CT125. we celebrated his 70th birthday on Saturday evening with cake and ice cream and a rousing chorus of "happy birthday!":

picture.php

and one of my KLR in action in Yellow Rock Canyon, just before the two track got wash-y and really difficult:

picture.php

and The Garage in Yellow Rock Canyon, having all made it through High Rock:

went and caught the sunrise on Payne Peak, ten miles from the Cedarville fairgrounds, on Saturday morning. that’s Warren Peak in the Warner Range on the horizon, with some Surprise Valley playa in the distance:

can't wait till next year, and the 2024 EoP Rally ... we've been doing the End of Pavement Rally mostly every year since 2018.

Sweet....! :thumbup

Fish is safe. Riders are safe... smiles and coffee had. :thumbup

Wow that looks like fun, though deep scary water crossings gives me pause... Great pics, I particularly like the one with the fish seemingly staring at the rod that caught him in disbelief and the emergency shade parasol!

I forgot to mention the umbrella. Brilliant!! :laughing

I dig the old school tagging too. :cool

Great pictures John! Nice fish. What kind of fly?

yes, I'm really disappointed I didn't get any pics of the water crossings, but when I'm riding scared I quickly forget to take pics. :facepalm:laughing

I look on the emergency-shade parasol as an important piece of old-guy safety gear these days.

plus, with my 2016-vintage purple Barf Midsummer Magic t-shirt and red suspenders, red parasol and 23-year-old battered KLR, it reflects pretty well my poli-dump clown show act. :toothless

the old-school tagging is fun to see, imagine those pioneers were my kind of people. :afm199

for me it was a pretty nice fish. hooked himself well, and put up a good fight on light line, set up mostly for brook trout/small streams. I was casting to fish I could see feeding on the surface on my knees behind some reeds, using a fairly big terrestrial--a "Joe's Hopper" we call 'em, idk. looked like this:

Looks like it was a great time! Maybe next year ...

I'm hoping our paths will cross on Thursday evening at StonyBARF on 09/07. and otherwise, we should be doing Cedarville again next year. :ride

Good stuff John! Wish I could have made it. I learned the parasol trick from you and usually don't leave home without it.

I did forget it on a recent trip, but a sleeping pad did the trick.

ha, that’s a brilliant pic! :thumbup

and I’ll have to remember the sleeping-pad emergency shade trick—just a little bit of wind out in the howling wilderness makes my safety parasol useless. :gsxrgrl

Nice pics!

I have seen your KLR making trips for years... getting good use out of it

thanks for reading and posting! :thumbup

and yes, the pre-gen KLR is a tough bike to recommend, but I’ve loved mine, guess it’s 23 years old. best $2k I ever spent on a used motorcycle, probably. :facepalm:laughing

a last pic from one of the two sunrises I managed to catch at this End of Pavement Rally—the Surprise Valley above Menlo Baths and Surprise Valley Road on County Road 42:

I went and soaked my feet in the little nearby undeveloped hot spring, afterwards. here’s a google maps pin drop, it’s a hot spring hard by the road down an embankment, which gives some privacy … kind of fun for a quick visit, and certainly free and easy.

Looks great, John - and well documented with some excellent pics. Nice!

hey Mr ThinkFast! :wave

thanks, and it was fun hanging out with you at Kirby Cove Thursday morning:

we have another reservation at Kirby Cove for October 16th and 17th at campsite 5, hopefully you can make one or both nights. I’ll have to start a BARF Adventure Riding thread and see if we can get some more BARFers to attend, also. :party

My current lack of employment means I could probably make those dates so long as I'm not out riding somewhere for some reason...

would love to see you! :thumbup

that's one of the nice things about having two nights in a row, folks could do one or the other, or both ... plus, it's literally a half hour from our neighborhood. we've had people swing by just to hang around the campfire for a bit ... :ride

Love the pics John! I couldn't do this year, looking forward to next

I don't love fish, but I want to do more fishing. You can have mine, deal?
