we did the Ms two wheel tramp/SFCootz End of Pavement Rally in Cedarville this past weekend ...
the last few years I’ve added a fishing license and some tackle to the crap I schlep on my KLR, and as the world's worst fisherman, I went fishing on Saturday in Nevada with my California fishing license, and found the one fish willing to be caught with a dry fly and a late '70s vintage fiberglass Orvis pack rod …
proof of trout in the Nevada sage desert:
Bolder Reservoir, with our helmets:
rainbow trout in the desert, who knew? Bolder Reservoir is maybe ten acres—and teeming with trout smarter than me, mostly. this one got thrown back, so maybe I can catch him again someday.
where we meet up, and camped for three nights—the county fairgrounds in Cedarville:
we had seven riders make an appearance and one wife—and two of the guys were just first-time lurkers, neither of whom had ever registered on a moto board. they just saw the thread title on ADV and said to themselves, hey, that's a wonderful part of the world, and showed up. how cool is that?
arty
by tradition, the EoP Rally is farm rulz, show up or don't style--but we are not animals:
Mr m0t0_ryder's 50 cup coffee maker, which, also by tradition, he uses to add a tad of life's basic necessities.
the rocks he found from the local obsidian mines in the area.
I called in sick Thursday, and rode to Cedarville in a 400 mile day, and on Friday six of us tackled the famous High Rock Canyon—this is the the 155 mile "easy" route most of us finished our day with:
and here's a link you can zoom in on and see Bolder Spring/Boulder Reservoir (where Bob B and myself went back to go fishing on Saturday).
you can also zoom in and try look for the "hard" route the three real men took at the end of the day, which branches off at Grassy Wash, on High Rock Canyon Road, between Steven's Camp and Rt 34.
this is what we were riding through on the way to Boulder Reservoir, and why finding water and fish was so surprising:
approaching High Rock, we got to deploy the emergency-shade parasol, which I carry for just such exigencies:
my plan on Saturday was to bale, but in the end I got sucked along through High Rock Canyon:
some 1852 graffiti left by the pioneers who used High Rock Canyon because of the abundant water. we had to do three deep, scary water crossings in the canyon.
High Rock kicked my fanny on the KLR, ouch. but I managed not to embarrass myself, yay. last time I ever do High Rock ona KLR, you betcha.
you can just make out the 2023 Honda CT125 Trail that Mr m0t0_ryder used this trip, second bike from the left in the pics above. a total bad-a#@ he is, kept up with the group, and I could barely keep up with him. here's a better pic Mr CrazyCooter took. yes, Mr m0t0_ryder can ride circles around me, even on the CT125. we celebrated his 70th birthday on Saturday evening with cake and ice cream and a rousing chorus of "happy birthday!":
and one of my KLR in action in Yellow Rock Canyon, just before the two track got wash-y and really difficult:
and The Garage in Yellow Rock Canyon, having all made it through High Rock:
went and caught the sunrise on Payne Peak, ten miles from the Cedarville fairgrounds, on Saturday morning. that’s Warren Peak in the Warner Range on the horizon, with some Surprise Valley playa in the distance:
can't wait till next year, and the 2024 EoP Rally ... we've been doing the End of Pavement Rally mostly every year since 2018.
