Had to cancel another credit card - again

I remember when I first started traveling for work my card gave me a bunch of fraud notifications about weird usage and asked if they were real purchases. Now TDGAF and no matter where I go it just goes through even overseas but they also give me lifetime dispute priveleges for fraud.

I never buy anything that I can’t get at Amazon.

And if one can’t resist buying stuff from unknown sellers, get a separate card just for those transactions.

That's what confusese me: the virtual card is connected to the real card, so I can use the virtual number to make a purchase online and the vendor takes that virtual number, which then pulls the money from the real card. What is the difference between me entering the virtual number and some lowlife entering the virtual number?
often when you generate the virtual card number, you can also set a $ limit associated with that virtual number; set it high enough for a planned purchase, and anything beyond that just doesn't go through, even if the number does get skimmed.

As I understand it, putting your card into Apple Wallet takes the virtual card number thing to a whole new level. Each transaction using your CC with Apple Wallet uses a single use number from the merchant's perspective. If the merchant has been hacked, the number gets the hacker nowhere.

I recently had Prime charges that I didn't recognize. AMZ confirmed that they did not come from my account and that one was from an AMZ based in Italy and the other from an AMZ based in Sweden. Called Chase Bank to cancel and during the phone call, my card number was updated in my Apple Wallet so that I could start using it after hanging up. The replacement CC took 5 days to show and I used my phone in the meantime. Good to know that there is a backup plan for the card if I am on a road trip and have to cancel a card.

What is this "nonsense" that you're referring to. I called the bank, asked them to cancel the card and send me a new one. That was it. About as painless as it could possibly be.
sir I'm not the one who started the thread complaining about having to get a new card (again)

:teeth

My backup plan is a second credit card that I only use when I have to cancel my main one. I'm using that one right now for a few days.

Looks like this thread has gone far enough. I'm tempted to lock the thing. :dunno

Why on earth does it need to be locked?
It was important enough to generate an entire thread and now you want to end the discussion?

I just get annoyed when a thread gets to the point where it feels like I have to start defending everything I've said so far. You guys all behave yourselves and we'll let it keep rolling. ;)

Am I the only one that has to regularly deal with stuff like this?
Possibly.

It happens to many (including me in the past) but then I don’t enter my card on Facebook links

I’m pretty sure it happens also when people in a tourist bar literally copy the number when you give them the card to pay for lunch, and they go to the end of the bar near the kitchen.

Another way is when you pay for a hotel (remotely) when it’s not a BIG website , e.g. Marriott, Hilton, Hotwire, booking, hotels.com . If it’s pasoroblesrandominn, com then maybe there will be a problem.(copy)

The virtual credit card is the right answer but almost no one uses it, including me.
I’ve used it a bunch of times already.

tbh, you started the thread specifically for this issue and then almost immediately acted as if it's of no importance whatsoever. :dunno

Lots of good suggestion in here on how to protect one's money.

Kind of crazy to me but I'm a luddite. I refuse to use amazon cus it's just plain ebil. I've had bad experiences with chase and crapitol 1 around my mothers death so I won't do business with those companies. I have a debit card that is linked to a checking account that I keep a couple of thou in. The CC I have started out as a secured card through Great Western I got in the 90s to be able to rent cars. Most of my purchases are with an ATM card, yes a motherfucking ATM card. The bank wanted to give me a debit card but I fought with them to get an ATM card.

Im almost the same. No amazon. One credit card issued by my credit union. I use visa’s money for all my purchases. I pay off the balance a couple times a week via my credit unions ap. On ap to move money around, pay all my bills and my mortgage. If three is any funny business I can speak to a person at a local branch or on the phone. Been with my credit union for over 20 years.

I know I’m leaving credit card perks on the table by only using a basic card. I just don’t care because things as they are keep things simple and stress fee.
