I'm thinking of switching insurance from Statefarm to AAA - but AAA doesn't cover motorcycles, they have tied up with Progressive for motorcycle insurance. So I'm looking at Statefarm vs. AAA/Progressive - anyone with experience care to comment on the change? I stand to save almost $300 per year, and I can use that to sign up for AAA's premier membership for about $120. How is Progressive for motorcycle insurance?

Talking about insurance is like talking about religion around here.
Fwiw, I have Progressive (no AAA) and I am happy with it.

I have progressive through USAA and they have been really fare and helpful during my stolen motorcycle claim and accident claim.

If you can't get USAA Progressive is a great choice. A rough company to work for but amazing coverage for the price.

I think that your collision policy includes $3000 worth of Custom Parts and Equipment Coverage which extends to gear.

My personal experience with State Frm claims leaves me in the NOT A FAN category. I am still arguing for $4000 of medical and $1600 of property from 2 separate vehicle claims.

Not a fan of State Farm after my dealings with them - I've seen worse, but they were hard to reach, and didn't seem to have much care about bikers.

Personally a huge fan of Erich Steigler with Farmer's - great agent, rider himself, and rates/coverage were very competitive.

I also have Progressive through USAA (discount) and they have been pretty helpful... rates didn't raise after my accident which they found me to be 0% at fault for. :)

Eligibility
Active, retired and honorably separated officers and enlisted personnel of the U.S. military.
Officer candidates in commissioning programs (Academy, ROTC, OCS/OTS).
Adult children of USAA members who have or had a USAA auto or property insurance policy.1
Widows and widowers of USAA members who have or had a USAA auto or property insurance policy.

Also, I shopped around to 3-4 other places out of curiosity and they were half the price in some cases.

Farmer's was good to deal with playing on the enemy team, they were super courteous and nice to me and stayed in VERY good contact/communication. Their insurance agents even sounded hot

it's renewal time at my house.

AAA just raised my wife's vehicle by $400, home owners went up 30%

I'm going to check state farm again....

fwiw Allstate has my house, boat, cars and bikes.
They have been fair and bike friendly.

I had Progressive through esurance before they had their own moto insurance. At renewal time Progressive took a big jump, so I switched over to esurance, which by that time finally offered its own moto insurance.

For some reason, Progressive through AAA for my bike was $700+ more than Progressive's site directly for the same coverage. YMMV.

That's kind of odd. I have AAA for Homeowners, my truck, the wife's Escalade, and my KTM 950. Compared to what I used to have, the homeowners was a little more than half of what State Farm was charging us (a family friend was giving us the Brother in law price, supposedly) for the same coverage, tied in with our cars, it is like my KTM is free, but it is liablilty only, I don't park it anywhere I can't see it, if I scuff it, I'll fix it myself. It's an 06, can't see insuring it so that if it gets biffed, they'll total it at $4000 or whatever, and I'm stuck paying $1200/year or someshit.

I'm not aware of us being sold off to Progressive or anything. I've never seen any paperwork to that effect.

That is strange. Can you check your paperwork? I wonder if that has anything to do with the AAA office/agency I went to. It was the one in Redwood City.

Mine is down here in Santa Barbara County. I'll check tomorrow, I just got off of work.

I just looked. Nowhere does it say Progressive on any paperwork I have concerning my bike. Maybe it is different from county to county?

Thanks for looking. I also tried getting a quote directly from the Progressive site, but that was higher than through AAA.

I did contact my Statefarm agent to see if Statefarm can match or beat these rates, but I haven't heard back yet. Looking at the responses in this thread, I might switch to AAA/Progressive anyway.

Progressive also covers USAA, since USAA doesn't cover motorcycles.

Have been very happy with them. They also cover up to 100 miles of towing a year as part of the basic coverage.

Does anyone with USAA in the bay area know if they have towing coverage? I had switched from them to Progressive because the agent I was talking to said USAA will not offer towing coverage for motorcycles. Wondering if the agent was right or not.

I have towing included with roadside assistance with USAA AND Progressive, and it's only like $1 more a month. Not sure what you mean since USAA does not insure motorcycles period.

Progressive here; non-AAA/USAA. They offered me the best rate(s) by FAR and they're always easy to deal with and get hold of. It's trivial to modify your policy via their website too, which I like. I'm a fan.

What works for me is Geico for the Motorcycle, less than $ 150 a year full coverage.
( if you have a newer type of sportbike like GSXR/R1,R6/600RR,1000RR, ZX10, etc, that gets stolen often it would be allot more $$$ )

with your bike the cost should be around the same depending on your driving record and age.

and

AAA for the Towing/Roadside assistance $ 120 a year.
( it paid off a few years back many times over in reimbursements )
