Since the law is that it is illegal to take bikes under 150cc on the highway, how would that apply to a Grom with a big bore kit?

Stock, it is 125cc and 8hp or something, which obviously has no place on the highway anyway. But a big bore raises motor volume to 180cc+ and more than doubles the power output... Does adding a big bore kit make the Grom highway legal?

Good question. I think that it is capable, the real question, do you want to be on the freeway with a bike that small, speed capable or not?

The bikes small wheels and poor suspension needs some improvements to maintain freeway speeds for comfort reasons, i wouldnt though. Lifted trucks cant see you and cloud you in exhaust, and you cant outpower out of it either

Its terribly frightening merging onto the freeway wot and hoping the car sees your midget stature and is not a tailgater. Because you have no real control of your outcome, slow down become pancake or go wot and pray you get seen

Some concern with how many miles a hopped up Grom motor will survive at near redline on the freeway.

The big bore Grom has no problems doing highway speeds, and it doesn't need to be at WOT all the time. I wouldn't do it for extended periods of time because small wheels... But is it legal?

Legal or not, a stock Grom can go on the freeway. What Robbie said about lifespan though:dunno

Isn't it a simple CC issue?

151+ is legal I believe.

At least that would be my story if I got pulled over.

If I had a stock grom I wouldn't think twice about taking the freeway for an exit or two to bypass congested surface streets.

just my opinion...

No it's not legal. The modification you've done to the Grom violates the the emissions laws in the first place, so you certainly don't want to use that as a legal excuse. And the Stock unit wasn't legal for that
use, and that's what traffic enforcement would base it's decision on.

This.
legal classification is for how it was sold new, not what you've done to it

Legal or not, I, personally, wouldn't risk riding it on a "freeway". On the other hand, I guess it really depends on the amount of traffic where travelled.

Come to think of it, I could have sworn one had passed me during commute drive home on 880 on evening, lane sharing. I was more surprised to see it on the "freeway" than him lane sharing.

However, places like Hwy 9, 35, 84 for example, is perfectly legal. several of us have taken our under powered mini's on those roads on many occasions :ride

Check the mini forum or post up if you have any mini group ride plans ;)

Agree with others that it doesnt work.

What is stamped on the case cover?

Do LEO have eyes to read that stamping, or do they have a way to verify the cylinder volume from the outside?

I can assure you they have eyes at the very least. And I bet they wouldnt mind towing the bike to one of their mechanics to verify the volume. At your expense. 8 weeks later. And then confiscate it under CARB rules.

But. You do what you want. :ride
