Looking for a roof rack tray / basket thingamajig

I'm looking for one of those roof rack trays, baskets or whatever you call it. Plan to put it on the roof of the CRV so when we grab some of our grandkids we can bring their bicycles and such.

Make one out of marine grade plywood. Use a jigsaw and make long oval holes to lighten it up and let the wind through. Drill holes for metal U bolts to secure it to the racks. Bring up the sides as high as you think you need and rout out some slots to put your tiedown straps through. Make sure to send those smooth with Emory paper so they don’t cut into your straps.

You can vary the thickness of the plywood, depending on your anticipated load. The wire racks I’ve seen like you described or stupidly expensive and really flimsy. The good quality ones like the adventure Bros by our exorbitant, but really strong. Make a project for yourself and let the kids stick some decals on it from the place that you visit or their favorite brands

The amount of use this will get is nominal, basically 4-8 times a year. I like the wood idea, protects the roof as well plus made to my measurements (that could be interesting )

I agree the wire racks are stupid expensive. I may have to consider this.

hey Sam, if the intended car has older style rain gutters, I have some volvo branded stretcher bars that clamp on ... for free.99
not sure if a CRV qualifies, tho.

Hiya Simon hope you are doing well. I appreciate the offer, very kind of you. I have the crossbars for the car, I am trying to get one of those baskets so I can toss the grandkids bicycles and other crap up there.
