Is there a grace period on expired tags?

Nope. See below:

http://www.dmv.ca.gov/vr/vr_info.htm#BM2512

The penalties when paying annual renewal registration fees late.

California does not offer a grace period after your vehicle's registration expiration date. Be sure to pay your renewal fees on or before the date of expiration shown on your current registration card or penalties will be due in accordance with Vehicle Code Sections 9552 - 9554. The longer you delay payment of fees, the greater the penalty amount will be.

Even though your plates display only the month and year, your registration expires on a specific day. Be sure to check the registration card for the actual day of expiration.

If you do not receive a billing notice approximately 60 days before your vehicle's registration expires, please call 1-800-777-0133 to find out what your fees are.

What I meant is will my vehicle be impounded after 2 to 4 weeks from expireation date ,if stop in traffic by a leo?

doubtful. Was in a car with expired tags, it comes out being a fix it ticket.

No impounding of the vehicle for registration expired less than 6 months. See 22651(o) VC.

I know that DMV is notoriously slow in getting registration tabs mailed out, so I always check the DMV computer system to se if the vehicle is currently registered and do not rely on what tabs are on a plate.

22651. A peace officer, as defined in Chapter 4.5 (commencing with
Section 830) of Title 3 of Part 2 of the Penal Code, or a regularly
employed and salaried employee, who is engaged in directing traffic
or enforcing parking laws and regulations, of a city, county, or
jurisdiction of a state agency in which a vehicle is located, may
remove a vehicle located within the territorial limits in which the
officer or employee may act, under the following circumstances:

(o) (1) When a vehicle is found or operated upon a highway, public
land, or an offstreet parking facility under the following
circumstances:
(A) With a registration expiration date in excess of six months
before the date it is found or operated on the highway, public lands,
or the offstreet parking facility.

My experience is just the opposite. I renewed 2 vehicles online on the 4th of this month and received the tabs 4 working days later.:ride
