Keep my carelessness and stupidity in mind the next time you go packin' for an adventure. Know that I got lucky....

I was at the bottom of HWY 17 coming in from SF/Hawthorne when a loosened nylon tie down got caught between my sprocket and swing arm.

At about 70 mph, I felt my rear end drop, as if i fell into a giant pot hole. I pulled over to inspect, as I found it peculiar that my front end didn't take a hit as well, since I did not see a pot hole.

Upon closer inspection, I find my rear hub smoldering a bit. And noticed a wad of nylon strap had bound itself in the all up in that bitch.
Luckily the strap did not bind the wheel nor did the buckle get caught in the sprocket and chain.

Anyway. The strap broke, bending my subframe and cracking my rear cowl on both sides. Notice the abrasion marks on the rear cowl.

I also had bungees securing my tail pack, and in retrospect i think that's prevented the entire pack from getting sucked in there.

I have a new/used subframe ready to mount, but I figure I'll wait until I do my track day. lol.

As I said I got really lucky.

Secure your straps.

that's a gnarly strap if it's strong enough to bend the swingarm, geez.

damn!

as stated above most are actually surprisingly strong... plenty a truck with a loose nylon strap has suffered a slight crash/damage from the strap being pinned by the tire

Glad you're ok, Karbon!

I'm usually fairly concerned about this exact thing happening, but tend to favor "whatever, I'm sure it's fine". Not anymore!

I'll be more careful from here on out.

Once you resolve how to avoid the easy mistakes it's time to enjoy advanced FUBARs. Thermarest air mattress in saddle bag expanded from heat from the slip on. This caused the soft luggage to get too friendly with the rear tyre, generating more heat and expansion until the assembly got sucked into the rear wheel/swingarm. This locked the rear at 80 MPH on 25, pulling the clutch in didn't help the confused rider any and severely flat spotted the new rear tyre. He was lucky and kept the bike up. The skid mark on the asphalt was almost as long and dark as the one in his shorts.

Dude.. Here's a story to prove you're not the only one this happens to..

few years ago I had saddle bags on my bike that weren't properly secured or balanced and my laptop got caught up between the tire and the fender. Laptop still worked but the lcd had a tire burn mark through the back of it. I was pretty pissed at myself for such a dip shit mistake.

hard luggage ftw.

I did lose one of my Givi cases I bolted to a back seat once, but it didn't do any damage to me or the bike at least. :p

Yeah, I was rollin like white trash, had a box bungeed to the back. A long sleeve wafted out of the box, I heard the fluttering and stopped right away. I had clothing in the sprocket and wrapping around the hub when I stopped.

FUUUUUUU...
Now. Where's the thread in which the dude touring on his Ninja 250 caught all this gear on fire via ill-packed soft bags and bungees?

Thanks for your well wishes folks!

I remember that. The fella was on hwy 1/ Big Sur when a driver noticed flames and smolder coming from his pillion and flagged him down.

I was on a trip from San Jose to Phoenix last summer and I didnt want to run out of gas between Blythe and BFE, so I strapped a one gallon gas can to the back , I made it to hwy210 when someone pulled up next to me and started pointing at the back. One of the straps had wiggled to the side and the can was hanging on the rear tire, it rubbed a hole in the plastic can and poured all over my tire and the road and probbly the cars behind me. Lucky I didnt blow up. :(
